I highly recommend to NOT install the mobile broadband with the UHD. It will screw up your MOBO and the PCI bus will run at 1x instead of 16x for the graphics, requiring a motherboard replacement. Trust me, I've already been through this hassle.

Would this be the case with any device you put into this port? I had already ordered a little usb adapter for this slot to move my wireless mouse dongle inside the laptop.

I'm unsure but I'm definitely not going to try. My original machine came with the Mobile Broadband and UHD screen from the factory, and I had issues with switchable graphics, and with switchable graphics there was a red line on the first few rows of pixels on the LCD, although the graphics were running fine at 16x. The entire machine was replaced and this time the line on the LCD was not there, but the PCI bus was then running only at 1x. My case was escalated to the Resolution Expert Center and my rep built me another machine and said Dell stopped allowing configurations with the Mobile Broadband and the UHD screen because of the issues I was having.

If you want to try, prepare for a dGPU and/or MOBO replacement. When you do insert something into this spare port, I would run the dell diagnostics with and without switchable graphics, run GPU-Z to make sure your graphics is running at 16X, and boot into windows with switchable graphics off and make sure your first few rows of pixels are not discolored (you may have to move the windows taskbar and change your desktop background to something colorful to notice). I would also inspect the boot screen with the Dell Logo and make sure there is no awkward loading bar at the bottom that is florescent in color (this was another symptom I noticed).

Not to jack your thread but this is the closest thread to my issue.

Guys real quick, I can't find help anywhere. Bought a 9560 UHD and fell in love w/screen but it was too small. Returned. Dell support told me to get the 7720 with Narrow bezel, and said it's just like the infinity edge display only 17 inches. Is there such a 7720 with no plastic bezel or border like the infinity edge of the xps 15? Or at least close?

    Pls help sorreee to hijack!

    Hi,

Your message scared me because I did install a DW5811e in my Precision 7720 by myself.
So I started GPU-Z and it states that the graphics card is in "PCIe x16 3.0 @ x16 1.1" when idling and "PCIe x16 3.0 @ x16 3.0" when under load.

    Cheers,
    Alex

No, this is a case of the sales rep being clueless (and also the available options being, unfortunately, confusing and incorrect). The "narrow border" option means nothing, all 4K screens in the 7720 are the same. The bezel looks like the pictures that you see on the web site... There's no "infinity edge" XPS-like option.

Using Huawei ME906S-158 with 7720 4k, working good at x16 PCIe. I use Huawei modem for M6x00 too without any problem. No need to install driver, windows recognizes it automatically. Only problem is no software or web UI for the modem to do any setting (i.e. to fix the band), connection is done through windows default connection.

Dell modem is troublesome, need to modify installation file to migrate to other generation laptop. The software/driver is big and clumsy.
