Only if you need dual monitors.

I'm 90% certain second generation quad-core (Sandy Bridge) is not pin-compatible with first generation; the socket is listed as G2 as opposed to the G1 (also known as rPGA 988A for G1 and rPGA 988B for G2). So yes, the highest CPU that you an use would be the i7-940XM, although the i7-920XM is considerably cheaper (about 2/3 of the cost, usually), and with the unlocked multipliers can generally be overclocked to near equivalency.

Oh, and both first generation quad cores and dual cores will work with both motherboards; it's just that the dual-cores will only recognize two of the 4 memory slots in a quad-core board (and obviously, there are only 2 memory slots in a dual core board, so it doesn't matter that the quad-core can recognize more).

Yeah they will more then likely not be compatible, considering the desktop versions are not due to small changes in socket notches.

Yeah that's what I meant: I doubt that the second-generation CPUs are backward pin-compatible.

I'm flooding the board with questions today, apologies. Considering how close 920 is to 940 if I can get 920 at same price as 840qm how significant an upgrade is it? I've read through an exact thread on the topic and most say difference is negligible, but I''d like to get a perspective from m6500 owners. Also curious about battery life for those with 840's and 920's. 840 probably overkill enough for me and i doubt i'd OC but suppose it's nice to have the ability with the 920

new issue i found with my m6500 today.

so computer is on. i step away from it and left it on. i have my screen saver set to blank, so when i came back after a while the screen is blank, not a black screen but a blank screen. the blue led light on power button is dimming on and off. so i figured it probably went to sleep so i pressed the power button to turn it back on, but nothing. i pressed it a few more times but nothing. so i decided to hold it to power off and power back on again. anyone else experiencing the same problem or know what the issue might be? thanks.

Had a similar problem with my M17x with 5870m before I updated to a new vbios. Seeing m7820 is based on the 5870m, I assume it has something to do with the vid card.

I have had several M6500s with several processors.

The 840QM is significantly slower than the 920XM in any process that requires computational power.

For example, the Photoshop speedtest by Retouch Artists (kind of a standard in the industry) was reduced from 24.5 s with the 840QM to 20.7 s with the 920XM. Ceteris Paribus

I have no idea as I don't have a m7820. You may want to ask someone who has one.
