Windows 7 is indexing your files which takes some time (and CPU and file IO) when your system is new and finds lots of unindexed files. As you noticed already, this resource usage will go done because at some point all your existing data is indexed and only new data will trigger indexing again.

Click on start and enter "index" in the search field (start menu content is indexed as well ;-) ). You should find "Indexing Options". That is the place where you can control which parts of your disk (and email or other storages which plug into Windows Search) get indexed. You may want to check if the Windows default index places meet your needs.

If the symptom reappears, you might try:

    • Deleting temporary internet files/history/cookies, etc.

    • Reducing the size (storage space allocated to) the browser cache.

    • Checking free space on the hard drive.
As a rule of thumb, > 25% free space is good.

    • Disk Cleanup.
Right click on the disk (or drive or partition) in Computer. On the General tab of the Disk Properties dialog box, click on the Disk Cleanup button. On the Disk Cleanup dialog box, click on the Clean up system files button, then select/delete all files.

    • The degree of disk fragmentation and when defrag is automatically scheduled to run.
The default schedule for Win7 is every Wed @ 1 am. Sometimes the schedule is missed or the task gets interrupted because the laptop is off. The last run time for each drive is listed in the disk degrag GUI tool. You can run the fragmentation analysis manually to see if the drive needs to be defragged and/or defrag it manually.

    • Checking the drive for errors.

Open files can't be cleaned up or defragged so it is best to close all applications, restart the computer, and then use the tools.

I know java has temporary storage too, but it is not installed on my laptops so I can't offer specifics.

    Hello,

I am considering a desktop monitor and I'm leaning towards the DELL 3008WFP-HC. I will be using this for development and not for photography/video. Just simply would like a very nice and big display.

Dell 3008WFP-HC, 30 Inches of Widescreen Swank

From what I'm reading, I will require an E Port Plus Dock (210w) if I want max resolution of 2560x1600. Is that correct? And would I connect via a single DisplayPort or via a Dual Link DVI? If the former, DisplayPort, then why would I require the Dock? But after reading the Gizmodo article it sounds like Dual Link DVI is the ONLY way to achieve the magical 2560 res. Plus, by having the Dock I would be able to drive two 3008WFD-HC monitors. yeah!

DELL E/Port Plus 210W Port Replicator for Dell Precision M6400/ M6500 Mobile WorkStations : Laptop/Notebook Accessories | Dell Canada

Anyway, just wondering if I'm understanding this correctly. I must have the port replicator/dock in order to achieve max rez of 2560x1600, even for just a single monitor?

    Thanks,

    Ben

You don't have to use the Dock. You could just use the DisplayPort out on the M6500.

This was Dell's first 30" with the new port and Gizmodo didn't have a card to test it with. DisplayPort will do 3840 × 2160 @ 10bit color per channel.

Can you give us a link to this? This is first I have heard of these issues. I know some of the R1 Alienware M17x and XPS 1730 computers had power supply issues, but had not seen anything on the M6500. I have one of the larger adapters at work with my dock and a thin adapter that I take home. Have used the heck out of both of them since early Jan 2010 and had no issues.

I also have not been very careful with the thin adapter, not abuse, but I just throw it in my backpack, pick it up by the cord, etc - and it seems to be standing up well.

If I remember that correctly there should be one or more reports in this thread about a blown up 50 cent fuse in the slim brick. So nothing you could provoke by physical abuse, just bad luck/design.

So right now its down to keeping my laptop or moving over to an Alienware. Cost wise we are talking about me paying 600 more for the Alienware and the only benefit I am getting is the 2nd video card. Advice guys??
