Did you try to configure the FSX executable in the "Configure switchable graphics" dialog, which you can open when right clicking the desktop? That is the only suggestion I would have.

As for games I only tried Diablo III so far, and that runs pretty smooth on 1920x1080.

Tried everything! FSX just refuses to cooperate.

Great news, on the Dell forum a user seems to have gotten a msata SSD to work in the E6540, check here.

Edit: the msata SSD used is a Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series MKNSSDAT120GB-DX mSATA 120GB, which uses a SandForce SF-2281 controller

I just installed a Plextor PX-128M5M 128GB msata ssd in the wwan slot of my E6540 and so far it works beautifully.
The ssd was immediatelly recognized by the E6540 A02 bios, the minicard SSD entry in the System Configuration section lists the model and type of the ssd.
I restored a backup from my Windows Server 2012 Essentials server, and Windows 8 booted right up.
Updating the Plextor firmware from 1.02 to 1.03 via the Plextor firmware boot cd also worked fine (even with Sata configured as AHCI).
The Plextor ssd uses the Marvell 88SS9187 controller, which is basically a newer version of the controller used in the more popular Crucial M4.

I now use the Plextor msata ssd as boot device and the original Seagate 500GB Hybrid drive as data drive. This meets my needs so I'm happy.
Attached the CrystalDiskMark scores. Based on the scores it is safe to say the msata/wwan slot in the E6540 is sata3 6gpbs compatible.

Been suffering what appears to be overheating and throttling today. Tried playing STALKER, but after 20-30 minutes of gameplay, the framerate plunged, movement became sluggish and the audio stuttered.

    New BIOS A02 available...

    Driver Details | Dell US

    Haven't installed it myself though.

I have been using the A02 BIOS version for a few weeks now (see my post from July 31st). It seems to help increase CPU speeds.

Did you have to install Intel Rapid Storage Technology 12.6.x or beyond to use the BIOS?
