Can you install both a m.2 drive and 2.5" drive at the same time in the 5470? From the photos it looks like they take up the same area.

    hello Paper,

are you sure its 2.5"? i thought in e5470, an m.2 2280 can replace the 2.5" therefore its an m.2 2280 and m.2 2242 (in the LTE card slot). thanks

Well, should have worded things better. "Must be" applied to the m.2 2242portion. 2.5" was there since you were asking about 2.5" only

You can install 2 devices. M.2 2242 in wwan slot(only option, due to size restriction), and one item in the 2.5" slot(2.5", nvm pcie ssd or m.2 2280(or shorter versions of m.2)

I'll post some photos of a HDD-to-2280 swap and WWAN install Monday night if mine arrives on time.

(After looking at aftermarket WWAN cards, I ordered a USB stick instead. 2 SSDs is also really nice as I can keep my personal/gaming stuff (Windows) separated physically from my work (Linux)

Been staying on Linux land for a while, found some issues/solutions

    16.04 beta2->LTS.
Still have some graphics hiccups. Vlc full screen video stretch doesn't work(blue bars surrounds extra space around video. Video itself plays fine at 100% size). No solution

Screen flickers from time to time, keyboard backlight resets from off to on. No logs generated. Installed drm-intel-nightly kernel 4.6.0-994, Flickr issue gone. Keyboard backlight seems to be fixed too

Linux sleep. WiFi sometimes doesn't work after wake, needs a kick via nmcli
    http://askubuntu.com/a/608897

Windows installed on m.2 2242 fails to wake from sleep (needs hard reset), unknown if it's hardware issue (wwan slot doesn't wake up in time), need more testing

Just got my 5470, booted once on the default Windows image and stock configuration to make sure everything is OK, and then put in one of my SSDs and 32gb of memory.

Overall, really like it -- although the weight and size are surprisingly close to my (work-owned) 5510. In direct comparison, the achievement in jamming the 15" screen into that one is even more impressive.

    Things I really like:
    * The keyboard is (now that it's fixed) a bit better than the 5510 and much better than (worn state of) my M3800. Real mouse buttons are much better, and the pointing stick works well while typing. Oh, and real Page Up and Page Down keys (the absence of which on the M3800 and 5510 is inexplicable, given that the spaces are there for them and the layout otherwise largely the same.)
    * The screen is really bright and sharp, and the color reproduction nicely neutral. It's nowhere near as nice either in brightness or color reproduction as the IGZO HiDPI screen in my M3800, but the other FHD one in the 5510 is not noticeably better at least when not directly side by side. It'll also check the brightness side by side with my wife's E7440.
    * The new version of the 65W power supply is tiny. Nice!
    * Absolutely no surprises with drivers. I cloned the Linux installation directly from the 5510 and it just worked immediately.

One neutral observation that may indicate a downside later:
    * It gets pretty warm, even under quite light load

    Three down sides so far:
    * There was a tiny, and fortunately fixable, manufacturing defect -- the "shield" around the keys wasn't fully clicked down, and had high points. Which made typing awful. Fortunately, the fix was obvious -- I removed it entirely and reinstalled it, and after clicking at enough points (and sadly getting a few scratches -- use a wood dowel or plastic scribe if you do this, not a flathead screwdriver like I did!) it sits flat and doesn't get in the way of typing. I miss the old non-island-style keyboards, but as these go, this is
    * I can't install my main SSD yet, which is a M.2 2280 drive. It came with a 500GB 2.5" drive, and there is no screw point to hold down the back of the M.2 drive -- I guess there's a little bracket missing. I may call support about that, but in the meanwhile this evening I am going to put in a 2.5"-to-M.2 adapter which will work for now.
    * I can't boot off the 2242/WWAN slot SATA. I mean, points for having SATA to that at all, and it's really nice to have the option of a second drive (at least unless I later put in a WWAN card) so I don't have to partition the main one for Linux, but it's a nuisance. Right now, I'm using a USB key to boot initially and then loading the kernel and initramfs off the M.2 SATA card. It works, but... really, Dell? I should be able to avoid this being an issue once the main SSD is in.

I'm tempted to kick off a rebuild of some big package like Firefox just to see how the noise and heat under load are...

I also need to find a smaller SATA-to-mSATA or SATA-to-M.2 connector; I think it should be possible to get two SSDs into the main bay.

    Also, some quickie cpuburn results:
    - 8x burnP6 on the 5510 -- crept up from 70C to about 80C, solid at just under 3.2ghz for 15-20min
    - 8x burnP6 on the 5470 -- ~88-90C, ran at just under 3.2ghz for the first 2-3 minutes, then dropped to 3.05ghz

Neither one as loud as my M3800 under full load, although both still kind of noisy.
