Yes you can install a fresh/clean Windows 7 OS into your M6800. The OS key is stored in the UEFI/BIOS of the M6800.

Oh yes, do not attempt to use UEFI in Windows 7 though!

Haven't had any issues with UEFI in Windows 7 (just turn off secure boot first...).

Thanks for your replies and help! When I receive the laptop, should I start/check out the laptop using Windows 10 or should I image the new drive immediately with Windows 7? I'm thinking I should boot into Win 10 and then image the new drive using Win 7 (an actual "downgrade")? Would that also protect my Win 10 rights on the computer should I ever choose to embrace Win 10?

And thanks for the reminder about UEFI. An M6600 refurb laptop that I bought for my son was imaged as a RAID (under UEFI if memory serves) and I had to make a note that if I ever went back to the original HDD I'd have to go into the BIOS and change back to UEFI. I didn't need or want the RAID so when I reimaged his computer I changed to the other setting in the BIOS.

I really like the Precision series. Over the years, I've purchased a number of M6600s, an M6700, and a couple M6800s. I really love these workstation laptops. They are very amenable to upgrades/repair, but are very reliable (knock wood!) and well-built. The new Precisions don't interest me as much since they don't have a built-in optical drive, and I really like what I have now, which is OS on an mSATA and two 2.5" HDDs for storage. I get enthusiastic over laptops the way some guys get about sports cars (Fortunately my wife is very understanding, and realizes the Precisions are way cheaper than sports cars! She is currently enjoying my old M6700 with the lighted keyboard and Extreme processor.).

Don't worry about your Win 10 licence. It is there for your system permanently once it has been activated.

When you decide to move to Win 10, just to Micro$oft's website to download the tool to get the latest Win 10 ISO.

Whack that onto a USB stick and off you go!

Hey guys I love my m4800 with WQHD 3200x1800 resolution though my eyes are not as good as they were even 2 years ago I'd like to go to a bigger screen. Since they are similar enough and I have all my settings the way I want and just want to upgrade to a 17" and plug my old drive m4800 drive into it. I can't seem to find an m6800 with 3200x1800 or 4k screen. I assume they don't make one? Is there an aftermarket upgrade for this because I need the high resolution for my work.

    Thanks

M6800 was never made available with a screen with higher resolution than 1080p...
High-res 17" panels were not available at the time.

I've never heard of someone upgrading either. Probably will have to go to 7710 for high-res 17", but if you have an mSATA drive then it would not work in the 7710, you'd have to upgrade to a M.2 drive.

Is anyone able to give instruction on the easiest way to access and tighten the hinges? I bought a refurbished m6700 and the lid teetered a bit when open at any angle.
Is it as easy as popping of the top speaker grill to gain access?

Also, I am a little disappointed with my ips premier color panel after hearing many good things.
The viewing angle isn't great when viewed horizontally from either the top or bottom, brightness is significantly lost, looks white and washed.
The display makes a lot of pics look too orangish.
Due to the high contrast, a lot of small details like tree leaves seem to loose detail, mostly like when looking at an oled panel.
I am using my sony vaio z1 with a 1080p as a benchmark.

I think you have posted in the wrong thread if you are talking about the M6700...

Hi, I am happy to have a m6800, I traded my m4800 for it.

Here is what I currently have:
    i7-m4810q
    32gb ram
    m2000m
    2x m500 960gb ssd
    1x 256 850 Evo MSATA SSD

I like the laptop alot, however :

    1) Im getting ready to drop a m4000m into it. Has anyone ever used.upgraded to m4000m ? What was your experience?

2)I love the AU Screen, sure would be nice to have the 17.3 UltraSharp UHD IGZO(3840x2160) screen to put in there. I have tried o read all 80 pages...

But has anyone made a successful installation of a nicer screen?

    Thanks for any info!
