Ok I need some advice/help from folks here. In the process of taking the M6800 apart to swap the Dell K3100M for the HP K4100M, that I scored from eBay, I was a bit of a klutz and broke a tab/clip.

It's that white plastic tab/clip that secures the keyboard cable to the black keyboard connector on the motherboard. I was able to salvage the tab/clip and slip it (in the correct and same manner before it broke) into the connector together with the keyboard cable and it is holding alright. Luckily the keyboard works.

However, I worry that it might not be secure enough since it no longer have the two tabs at the side to secure firmly into the connector. A hard knock would mostly loosen it or pop it out altogether.

Is there anyway to replace that little white tab/clip? Do I need to call Dell?

If you cal dell they will most likely void your warranty. Just se some tape to secure it better and call it a day. Or even better, use it as it is and in case kb gives you issues revert to ducktape method.

I dont think you can get standalone clip just a whole motherboard.

Had a quick chat with Dell Support via Twitter. It's either to replace the whole motherboard under warranty or I need to try to find a faulty motherboard and get the clip off that.

I just installed the HP K4100M into the M6800. I am getting an error in Windows 8.1 (code 43) and the device is disabled.

I can uninstall the card in Windows device manager and scan for it again, it will pop up and install fine without any errors. I have not tested if it works that way. Is there anyway I can test it and make sure it runs with the Intel video card coming into play? I'll try new drivers later today as well to see if that fixes it.

Is this due to a driver issue or the HP card just doesn't work in the M6800 without getting the vBIOS fllashed to a Dell (whitelist issue)?

    *Update*

Nothing I tried worked. New drivers caused the screen to flicker constantly in a loop and there's nothing I can do to it. I couldn't shut the system down and the system wouldn't respond. Only the mouse works...

Gave up in the end and reverted to the original K3100M and everything works nicely. Now in the process of returning the item to the seller through eBay.

    Hello -

I have a M6500 now and am considering a new laptop. I'm a mechanical engineer using Solidworks CAD and a photographer using Lightroom and Photoshop, and use a NEC LCD2690WUXi external monitor that I calibrate with a X-Rite puck. When I use the external monitor thru a docking station, I most often keep the laptop's screen closed and only use the one external monitor.

My big, big question is can I can drive the external monitor with a M6700 to the external monitor's 1920 x 1200 screen resolution like I do now with the M6500? Remember that the native resolution of the M6500 is 1920 x 1200... and am someone who considered the newer models a "downgrade" because of the lost screen area. I'd probably get a Nvidia K3100M video card unless someone scares me off that choice.

Also my M6500 is a RGBLED one... great for color calibration. I see that they don't do/advertise them anymore. Are the newer screens just as good for color?

My M6500 has been crashing some recently... I am guessing that the culprit is the video card driving the external monitor, because sometimes it blinks black. I'm otherwise still happy with the M6500, and am only considering replacing it because I need to send a laptop to a Haitian IT college student I'm sponsoring. So he could get my old M6500 and I get rid of the crashing problem. Also the crashing problem in the M6500 might have coincided with my upgrade from a 256GB SSD boot drive to a 1TB SSD. I'd put the 1TB SSD into a new M6800 and install Win7. I hate Win8, mostly because I hate learning new stuff. I do have Win8 on my micro Zuma dedicated audio computer, but generally only run one program on that, JRiver.

FWIW, my one employee has the M6700.... in case I should test drive something.

    No, they are not.

There's no comparison between a TN screen (with white LED backlight) and an IPS (with RGB LED backlight) screen, when it comes to color reproduction (gamut) and viewing angles.

Bah, I didn't see this before I bought. Assuming you mean that the TN screens are not nearly as good as IPS. However, I'll do all my serious photo editing on the external NEC monitor.

New question: the M6800 I bought has four DIMM slots and will arrive with 2x4GB. Can I successfully add and use 2x8GB for a total of 24GB? Any good sources? I often go to Crucial, which lists the M6800 as "2 banks of 2".
