I came across the M6600 when searching for the best workstation laptop I can get for under $900. I plan to buy one with the following specs for under $850:

    Intel Core i7 2820M Quad Core 2.3GHz (8MB Cache)
    16GB Memory RAM
    17.3 UltraSharp FHD(1920x1080) Wide View Anti-Glare LED
AMD FirePro M8900 Mobility Pro Graphics with 2GB GDDR5

I wonder if I'm making the right decision because my other option is to look for a much cheaper workstation with great price/performance and just upgrade to a lighter workstation laptop within a few years. Laptops like the Dell Precision M3800 make me feel like I should wait a little longer for a workstation laptop.

I will not make any comments on the price, because device is worth only as much as the buyer is willing to pay. If seems too expensive to you, you just keep lookin for a different offer.
I want to to focus your attention on a different aspect: considering very short waranty period left on this laptop, I would never decide to buy a config with M8900! This card will die - rather sooner than later - and I would only focus on configs with the graphics card already replaced with M6100 (this is the one Dell replaces broken M8900s with).
Unless, the seller can somehow arrange the replacement with Dell support, you wil be left with nothing after M8900 is gone. Reasonalby efficient GPUs for this model are still expensive.

M6100 is a way better card than M8900 - it is faster and offers better working temperatures. It is also faster than NV cards originally offered for this laptop. So far I have not heard of a single broken one.

BTW. I've already had two of M8900 broken - never more!
