My IPS doesn't make any Fan noise, by that I mean no scratching or chirping when starting up.
The other one, Optimus, makes a light chirp when starting but it doesn't bother her. It annoys me.

I've had a couple other M600's w/ Optimus and the chirp was intolerable. I'm not sure but I think it might be the CPU fan.

The heatsink on the m6600 is the same for amd or nvidia cards, it's just a matter of placing the right thermal pads to compensate for chip heights. Nor does the wattage of the card matter (as I understand there are several heatsinks available depending on card, in the m6700).

BTW, I still didnt update the bios to A14 as I'm too lazy to find the battery and plug it in :)

After hearing a story about a bad BIOS that got released (for a different model, some years back), they'd pulled it down after a couple days but not before a few hundred downloads. Yikes.

Waiting a solid week probably isn't such a bad idea and getting at least one confirmation from someone who's done it here - that it is ok.

Luckily I didn't attempt to password my drives (UEFI/GPT) earlier, otherwise might've been affected by the issue this one fixes.

Thanks for the update. My 6600 (knock on wood) seems finally stable connected via Displayport to a Dell U2711 after reinstalling Windows 8; installing the Dell-approved NVIDIA driver and switching off Optimus. Whew. I was really losing my patience with it.

Good to hear. Which driver did you settle on?

On the Optimus machine I still use (Dell R316049/HDJ8C) but it can't run with Optimus enabled because Photoshop CS5 will crash or won't start. But for me it is perfect on the IPS machine.
For the IPS the most recent Dell/nvidia versions have one side effect that I can't live with: if I'm in sRGB colorspace and (Premiere is not running) then resuming from a closed the lid or standby or hibernate then the colorspace is put back into Full RGB mode. Minor but annoying.

    FYI:
BIOS A14 is working fine and is not a major update. Much of the core framework remains the same.

Oh, I might update the firmware then. *Sigh* I just got the "driver stopped responding but recovered" thing. It's NVIDIA 311.10. That's the latest one Dell has. I dunno, Optimus runs fine with CS6: no crashes. I only have problems with the Dell U2711. No issues with the 21" 2209WA.

Out of the all the Dell and Nvidia drivers I have tried on my current setup, which is docked and feeding (2) displays, the driver below has worked the best for me while bumping up the WEI reference to 7.3 (I'll take it with a grain of salt).

Your mileage may vary -

Here's the one previous (but don't ask me why) it's still A05 and 296.79: Driver Details | Dell US

Here's mine: Driver Details | Dell US

There doesn't look like any changes to video handling in the A14 BIOS.

Starting to sound like W8 might have a problem with that monitor.
