Oh well, while I'm waiting around for windows update on the other machine, I'll try.

Is this an IPS LCD or is running Optimus? Sometimes resuming on Optimus machine that stuff can happen if anything gets corrupted.

Hey thanks, yes, it's running Optimus. I forgot, this isn't the IPS screen: it's the screen with the active digitizer.

The Optimus can be very sensitive and narrowing down the reason is like a needle in a haystack. Anti-Virus seems to be a common culprit.

I'd say try it with the Optimus disabled. Re-enable when you're going to need it. See how it goes.

Also, I'm not a proponent of using the drivers from the manufacturers sites. Always using one from the Dell support only. Every one of them has had some glaring issue.

Thanks! So far it hasn't died in 2 days. If it does I will disable Optimus like you advised. If that doesn't work, I'll use Dell's driver. Thanks very much for the help!

I upgraded my M6600 to Win 8.1 Pro Preview and the FPR stopped working again. LOL What a pain to get it working when Win 8 came out. I hope it will be fixed when 8.1 final is released. It shows in the device manager but Win 8.1 nor the DP software can find it.

Anyone else upgrade to Win 8.1 Pro Preview and have the same issue?

Same issue on the M6700. Looks like we need another driver update. Would not be surprised if it is not until 2 or 3 months after Windows 8.1 is available...

Thanks for the help man, but I installed that DSM and it didn't help at all. The weird thing is that I think it may be connected to working on a different network somehow. The issue only seems to happen when I unplug the power cable and then take my CPU to work and connect to my job's network. Then when I bring my CPU home, plug in power cable, start my computer and connect to my home network I get the brightness still at 50% issue. As an experiment I tried unplugging the power cable (at home), rebooting and then plugging the power cable in again and my brightness went back up to 100% like it should. I know this sounds weird, but this issue seems to only happen after rebooting and connecting to my job's network while my CPU is unplugged.

Maybe I am missing something else, but that is what I have been able to narrow it down to as of right now. It makes no sense though.

Try going into Control Panel / System properties and then User Profiles and see what's in there.

You might want to try searching the net and see if there are some topics about it.

Some of this stuff I just don't come in contact with very often, i.e, I just work at home on one network.

I have another question for your guys. I am happy and a bit disappointed all at once, lol. On Monday my m8900 graphics card decided to check out for good. After speaking with Dell, they said that the m8900 is discontinued and that I would be getting the Nvidia Quadro 3000m instead. I was happy because I have been wanting an Nvidia card for the longest (for the Optimus switching) and I have been razor close to buying one on ebay and installing it myself. But on the other hand I explained to the tech that the 3000m was a step down from the m8900 performance-wise and that the 4000m would be comparable, but after (politely) going back and forth with the Dell tech on the phone he was steadfast that this card was an upgrade because it cost $300.00 more. Of course after installing the 3000m card my Windows Experience Index wend down from a 7.6 to a 6.9 and notebookcheck lists the m8900 as a Class 1 card and the Quadro 3000m as a Class 2 card.

I am not sure what to do. Is it worth pushing for a card that is comparable to the one that I had before, or is the Quadro 3000m "close enough" to the m8900 that it wouldn't be worth another breakdown and re-install of my laptop?

Thanks in advance for any help given.
