I have the 8900M graphics card. Thanks for the shortcut, but I have no idea why it isn't working properly like it did before. For whatever reason it is resetting the "Plugged In" brightness setting pretty much every time. It makes no sense.

    Thanks again for your seggestions.

I have BIOS A13. I will try the removing the power supply and holding down the power button like you suggested. I don't think I even have Dell feature enhancement pack or Dell System Manager installed. I just checked and I do not see either of those installed on my machine.

Yeah you're gonna need either but not both DSM or DFEP. I prefer the standard DSM.

    EDIT:

    BTW,

Dell System Manager or Dell feature enhancement pack should be present in Programs and features.

    EDIT:

Illustrator, I noticed you've an AMD G-Card - Tommy gave me that link above awhile back so it might be older. But he did say he liked it and no Blue Screens.

Thanks for the info rcb.to.ca, my question is why do I need either DSM or DFEP? I guess what I mean is what do they do that effects the issue I am having? I am downloading DSM now.

Nope, but see what they do and decide whether you want them or not.

Well to be honest, I don't know - never been without either one or the other. It is a required application though and in the middle of the list.

It does let you know via a gradient bar what you're brightness, volume are. Colorspace, backlight settings etc. and Power Plans. Who knows what else?

All of those drivers are required.

    -------

    EDIT:

All of those drivers are specified/required in that order.

Just saw Tijo's post. Seems not required/must have.

But it may be a go between for active power policies.

Thanks. I am installing it now and I will test it out and see if it fixes the issue. I will probably report back tomorrow with my results. Hopefully it does the trick!

DFEP is what replaces control point (if I remember my stuff right) and some NBR members consider it to be bloated compared to control point.

Yeah I think DSM replaces CP (CP, Don't think you're supposed to run on M6600), and DFEP is alternative to DSM.

I never underestimate the tying together of all this stuff to the ACPI with all the driver software stacks.

Guess we'll see if it helps or not.

I have an irritating problem. I'll just check here first before I contact Dell support. When my Dell U2711 monitor is connected via DisplayPort for a while and after some sleep/wake cycles, I usually get a "NVIDIA driver has stopped working but has recovered warning". Of late, both laptop and U2711 screens go black with no recovery forcing a reboot. Does this happen to anyone else? I ran Dell's hardware and stress tests on the Quadro 4000M card that I have: no problems reported. I have NVIDIA's latest Quadro driver installed. This problem, I think occurs less now with the new driver. I also keep an eye on temperatures of the video card and it sits at about 65 deg C all the time with no spikes. Anyway, thanks for reading and help, folks. - Rory
