I am wanting to get an M6600, but I am having a very difficult time getting a straight answer out of Dell. I really would like a Blu-Ray burner on the M6600. I have talked with several people at Dell over the past week and a half and have gotten consistently contradictory answers about the Blu-Ray drive.

Several techs have said it is a blu-ray burner but several others there swear it is a player only. Does anybody know for sure of this drive will write Blu-Ra or not before I buy one?

A previous answer in this thread suggested it's a burner. Forgive me if I don't find it for you.

Thank you! That was it. I had flashed to the A03 BIOS and simply forgot to re-enable (well, thought it was enabled). Thanks again!

@fabrizioT: Thanks as well, I am running Windows 7 Enterprise. All is well now, feels great to get rid of the USB adapter for the 3rd display.

Sure. YOu have to choice on it: DVD Writer and BR reader OR BR/DVD Writer/reader (will have to recheck, but I think it's a Mata UJ-220 2X Blu-ray DVD-RW(DL) Drive)

    Hey

I'm an architecture student from New Zealand and will be doing an exchange at UCB, California and thinking of getting a M6600. It will probably be something along the lines of:

    i7-2720QM
    4.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
    500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
    17.3" UltraSharp FHD(1920x1080)
    NVIDIA Quadro 3000M/4000M

And will upgrade RAM and buy a SSD for it to install myself.

Wondering whether to get a 3000M or 4000M? Especially since there is a free upgrade to 3000M for now.
The software I am using for CAD, 3D modelling, rendering, graphic and video production will take advantage of the CUDA cores. Mostly from Autodesk and Adobe suites.

Will a 4000M be worth the price? Will it be noticeably faster, say with comparing the rendering times between both?

Thank you. When I look at the Dell online configurator, the only optical drive choices are either Slot or tray load DVD-RW, the last option simply says "Blu-Ray Disc Drive. It does not specify whether it is a reader only or a writer as well. That's where my confusion comes in.

I'd rather not spend the $400 for the upgrade if it is only a reader.

To me it's a matter of budget.
I read you're a student and i bet you have to carefully consider it.

In that case i would suggest to take the 3000m and eventually get 4000m or anything stronger in after market in 6/12 months. This way you won't probably spend more later than what you'll spend now opting for the 4000m, or maybe the 3000 will be just enough for your needs. So it would be a win-win solution.

The point is the 4000m is (probably way) stronger than the 3000, but it's a lot overpriced now.
