    No and No.

I checked all the components I could. In moving the machine around I got a whiff of the machine and it smelt like welding.

Anyways I identified that the issue was that on AC power the machine crashed and ran like a dog and it was OK on battery.

Dell is coming tomorrow to replace the motherboard on my month old machine. "We have to follow protocol" was their reply.

When I had issues with a Dell machine before the engineer was quite incompetent so I'm looking forward to a chain of issues now.

    Awesome...

I've seen this mentioned but have yet to resolve the issue. I have the Dell M6600 with the NVIDIA Quaddro 4000M and the Intel Core i7-2820M.

My problem is that I cannot get the Intel GMA driver to install. I've tried the software provided by the drivers CD, Dell's site, even Intel's site and continue to get the error message:

This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software.

Any ideas on how to resolve this? My ultimate goal is to hook up three displays (NVIDIA 4000M with the Optimus tech controls 2 and allows the Intel display driver to control the third) ...illustrated here: http://goo.gl/CQ2e8

    Thanks

It's interesting that you asked this. I had a problem with my M6600 when it arrived. The first thing I did was plug in the AC adapter, then hit the power button to boot it up. The laptop began to power on, then a second or two later, powered off with a bit of a high pitch whine as it died. It did this repeatedly and would not turn on. For some reason I thought to unplug the AC adapter, and after that it would turn on.

After that initial boot up it had no problem powering on with the AC adapter plugged in, but I discovered that after every time I powered down, removed the battery, and reinstalled it, the laptop would not power up with the AC adapter plugged in until I had powered it up once on just battery power.

That's weird. Anyone else noticed this?

Don't know about your issue, but i've had frequent problems with AC adapters from DELL in past years, that's the reason i asked that.
Especially newly introduced AC adapter models caused me headaches ... i bet the adapter of M6600 won't make any exceptions to this routine :)

The very first minutes i used the M6600 it smelt like something was burning inside. I was seriously concerned at first, then luckily all went normal.

Let us know how you'll get the problem sorted.

I have 2720QM and Quadro 4000M, no problems installing Intel driver.
I installed the driver found on DELL M6600 drivers page.

My OS is Windows 7 ultimate x64, what's yours?
Are you sure you tried to install the right driver (32 / 64bit) ?

Also make sure that you have Optimus enabled in the BIOS.

I am curious in how battery life is with ATI vs Nvidia cards.

I unplugged the AC adapter 15 minutes ago and worked normally on on battery (power saver profile).
    Now it says 5h07m left. That's with i7 2720QM and Quadro 4000M.

    EDIT: now it's 6h00m :)

Not sure if anyone answered this but I am debating between the quadro and the ati card (8900 vs 3000). I will be gaming and using production software as well as the unreal engine. As there is no difference in pricing at the moment what do you guys/gals suggest? I want to get the more powerful card to futureproof the system as much as I can and now I am confused on the pros and cons of each gpu. I understand the 8900 performs better for gaming and is a more powerful card due to drivers, but which should I get/is the better card?
