This is the email that they responded to me
"It is designed for generic motherboards. The part number you need is KTD-L3B/4G and you need (4) of them to max out the systems memory."
and they sent me a link Kingston Technology Company - Kingston Memory Search - Search Results for: but on there it only has "4GB 1333MHz Module" i want 2X4 of 1600mhz i dont want to buy something and then pay to have it returned

The 580M is back in the Clevo.

Both systems have 8GB RAM and a 2720QM (difference is M6600 has a Crucial M4 256GB SSD a much better screen).

If you want some additional test on the 580M, let me know.

I can give you the product code. I am sure it is such a small piece that you can just ask your Dell CS agent to send you one free of charge. At most you can get one for a few dollars.

No that is fine, it is just surprising that it could not beat an "inferior" M8900 and you were using the Clevo stock vBIOS right? The good news I can take out of this is that Dell highly likely didn't do any whitelisting to the MXM slot via the BIOS and you can take in similar GeForce or Radeon GPU's into the slot and it can work right off the bat. However, if so, then the M6600 should treat the 580M like the Clevo does and run it as a high-end GeForce. Therefore it should be humiliating the M8900.

The question I could ask is what does the M6600 detects the Clevo 580M as? A GeForce 580M or as a Quadros 5010M? This can determine why your results came as such and furthermore, if a 6990M "upgrade" is also possible painlessly if someone ever wants to get more juice out of the M8900 platform.

Just remove the heat sink and turn that round black socket release fastener on the right side of the socket a half turn. You will then be able to remove and replace the processor.

These are the two hardware id strings from device manager that I used to install drivers:
    Section016, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1211&SUBSYS_04A41028 - No Optimus
    Section045, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1211&SUBSYS_14A41028 - With Optimus

The vendor ID (10DE) is nVidia, the dev ID (1211) is a 580M and the subsys (x4a41028) appears to be Dell's Quadros.

So it read your 580M as a Quadros 5010M then?

Since the HP 8760w has the IPS screen I am leaning towards it. however, can this 580m be made to work in that machine, rather than pay the $1645 premium for the quadro 5010m or even the 6970 from ATI?

It is all dependent on the HP's BIOS and if it is lucky enough to recognize the 580M as a Quadros 5010M among other things.

They said they were sorry :)

And sent me a Dell external eSATA optical disk enclosure with DVD drive (which I don't need), which works ok. So they feel excused...
