The XPS or Alienware aren't even remotely in the same league as those Precisions.

Spec wise they get close, but they don't offer Quadro which unless you plan on rendering on a GeForce..

And Precisions are for business professionals, who don't need 7 color changing keyboards, glossy screens, and rather vulgar looking notebooks lol.

Yep. They are top of the line. Everytime I was asked whats the difference even they the same processor and memory. I will explain in a layman's way...

Take an F1 car. Drive it in an F1 circuit. Surely it will drive fast.
Take the same car. Drive it in a city. How fast do you think it will go?

In the computer world. Its the motherboard design that dictates those different class of Laptop.

I don't really agree with these comments here,
Yes if you need workstation like graphics (and i guess a way better type of screen at the same time) you just have to have these, no question about this.

But for the rest its not suddenly that you get different cpu's like a workstation desktop (xeons and ecc memory) No that's all the same hardware and chipset. If you would compare the speed of an exactly the same configured precision and xps i don't think you will find any difference in normal day use (except for the gpu part)
Also stability shouldn't be an issue because i have now a vostro (low end bus model right?) and that is rock stable.

Ofcourse besides that it is the casing that should be better designed and have a better durability, but if that really is the case is to be seen, my 4 year old vostro is still in a perfect shape and a 1 year old precision of one co worker already have a crack.. So i guess thats always a matter of luck.

Dell just makes way more money on a precision thats why if you really push and you buy 4 or 5 at the same time you even can get the price down to a high end xps ..... How would that be possible if it really was so much difference?

The other thing you forget is the support. Business-class support is miles (and by miles, I mean in the hundreds or thousands) better than consumer-class support. NBD (next business day) on-site is almost standard for most business-class notebooks.

Hmm, I find the XPS 17 ugly and plasticky looking. I had the HP 8710W, now the M6400 and these (HP 87X0W and Dell M6X00 series) are the only laptops I'd consider buying even if the only difference was in the casing. Doesn't the XPS 17 come with a glossy screen, as well?

Just a heads up, I don't think we are going to see these machines up for order until after March.

THe XPS 17 3D has two hdd bays, other models likely as well. Even after Precision upgrades to Sandybridge, only reason to get it would be better screen and higher resolution (apart from boasting rights, of course - covet).

These are pretty good reasons, although at a potential difference of ~ US$1000.- for some of us the financial aspects will trump.
