I need to get a extra power adapter for my M6400 Covet for home use. Taking the 210 watt power supply between the office and home is starting to take a toll on me (I take public transportation daily).

The 210 watt power adapter is only available with purchase of a port replicator. I could save some money an get a 130 or 90 watt power adapter, but I'm not sure what the downsides are. Does the 130 or 90 watt power adapter just take longer to charge? If the 130 or 90 watt power adapters degrade my performance, then I won't consider it.

What are other M6400 Covet owners doing for extra power supplies? For those of you who are using 130 or 90 watt power adapters, did you notice any decrease in performance?

I use the 130W and the 210W adapter. With the 130W adapter the M6400s performance drops during high performance applications. I will try the 150W adapter of the XPS M1710/M1730 because when I plug in the 130W adapter I get a message I should use at least 150W.

I think that extra power must be due to your FX3700 - cos my M6400 with a QX9300 and a FX2700 ed and wanted a 130W adapter when I plugged a 90W one in.

I have 3 90W adapters from my D8xx series and they seem to work ok - but I've not done any benchmarks. How large are the 130W adapters in comparison?

The new 130W adapter are very small! Even smaller then the old 90W adapters!

It is very interesting that you have no problems with the 130W adapter combined with a QX9300. The QX9300 uses 45W max and the FX 3700 uses 10W more compared to the FX 2700 so it should be equal...

    Therefore I assume the FX 3700 uses more than 75 W (it sounds really strange that a 32 shaders card uses 35W (FX770), a 64 shaders card uses 65W (FX 2700) and a 128 shaders card only uses 75W (FX3700)... ??

Ah no - I haven't used a 130W PSU yet -it was just that was what the lappy asked for when I plugged in my 90W adaptor.

Please let us know if the 150W works for you.

Also - if you could provide the specific Dell Part Number - that would make my day (yeah - I know - doesn't really take much to make me happy! :) )

Id guess the 150W should work too, I think we are all pretty much wondering about this.

on my qx9300 with 3700 - I get bios warning the PSU should be at least 150W.

Lets hope it works (without performance drop) - keep us informred if you can find an adapter

    Just ordered a 150 Watt adapter from e-bay -- Dell original part -- PA-15

Yeah - it's used -- but who cares -- Under 30 bucks shipped (Buy it now). I should have it within 3 to 4 business days -- but will not be home for a couple of weeks to try it out.

Will advise how it fares when I get home.

I ordered 2 PA-15 from Ebay too (one for traveling, and one for the living room ;) ). Im pretty shure it will work.

    T9400 = 35W
    FX 3700 = 75W
RGB LED = 17W (I don't trust the manual for this...)
    HDD 2x = 5-10W
    Ram, chipset etc. 5-10W
    _______________
max. ~ 140W --> 150W should work even for a X9x00 (10W more), because not everything will run under full load at the same time.
