M4800 Owner's Thread

- You cannot attach an eDP cable to the LVDS port on your motherboard. You need a motherboard with an eDP port and that will allow you to attach a 1080p eDP display or one of the higher resolution displays. The only significant difference between the different types of motherboards for this system is whether they have an LVDS or eDP port.
- You can use Enduro/Optimus with a 1080p eDP display, but not with a higher resolution display.
- Display panel choices might be slim even with eDP. I believe that the panel mounting style (bracket/screw positions, etc.) is different in this system than what you see in "modern" eDP systems (Precision 7510 and newer).

 

Thanks so much for the helpful reply! I won't have any intention going beyond FHD, so that's not an issue with either boards I find?

How different are they to the modern eDP? They don't mount like the ZBook 15 G2s?

 

Any eDP board should be fine. I think that there are two different model numbers for eDP boards but there is no practical difference between them.

After looking at some pictures, it seems that I was wrong here, M4800 eDP panels look pretty normal as far as mounting goes. (Still probably want to check carefully when deciding to replace the panel.) In this case though I am not sure if the LVDS and eDP panels would be interchangeable for mounting, it's possible you might also have to swap out the system display enclosure / lid.

It is M6700/M6800 that support eDP (to some degree) but have different mounting style from modern systems.

 

I had a feeling I'd have to replace the lid (not sure about bezel and hinges). I do have a spare eDP panel laying around from my Zbook upgrade to compare and potentially test when I get the right parts, but by the looks of that it may need a new lid after all. There's more than one kind of lid, though. It'll make sourcing a new one difficult.

 

A146J1 is the part I need. I've yet to find one that's in reasonable condition or almost in the same condition as the current LVDS lid. The mounting for the LVDS is entirely different to the eDP kind. This has proven it to be a bit tougher, as I may need one that already has the hinges and maybe the bezel and that it has to be in the colour diesel. But how would I know which colour is which by the part number?

 

So, hey, I received the slice battery 1 week later and it's working like a charm, with only 5% wear.

But what I am here to ask is: I bought a Precision M4800 and it has a FHD/IPS screen! That means it's eDP, right? If so, is WX 4150 compatible?

I already bought a M1200, but I could just return it if that's the case.

 

Pretty sure that M4800 can use any GPU with an eDP screen; it is generations prior to this that required an NVIDIA GPU if you had an eDP panel.

 

Oh. Is this valid for M6800 too? I know there are two types of heatsinks in that case.

 

Should be. Early M6800 systems shipped with LVDS displays, but later M6800 systems shipped with eDP displays (for all configurations).

 

So, I read through the forums for the M4800 and saw about the fan stuff. I know there are different fan models, and the most sought-after and favourite is the Delta fan.

But I'm wondering are there two variants of the Delta fan or just one? My M4800 has Delta fans for both CPU and GPU but I've seen images with a different appearance.
