M4800 Owner's Thread

Hello all.

I just got my M4800 today (QHD+ display), and while downloading Win7 updates, I noticed that the white is not nearly as white as my 2012 Latitude E6510. I increased brightness all the way and ran through calibration, but that didn't do anything. Has anyone noticed a slight yellow in the QHD display?

I've read most all of this thread, so I know that was a problem on the FHD, but I'm a little disappointed that my 3 year old Latitude has a brighter/whiter display. Have I missed something? I work with video and photography, so I'm quite concerned. Thanks for any insight.

Edit: When I say I ran through calibration, I mean I don't actually have a calibrator, so I could only change the gamma setting. My panel is:

I mostly work connected to AC. I have the battery set to custom mode, 50–100%. Haven’t done any research, maybe the 100% of the top limit is regarded by some as bad for its health… I’m just trying to keep the number of cycles as little as possible.
Over the years with other devices, I’ve generally had positive experience with the way I treat rechargeable batteries.

 

I'm wondering this too. There's plenty of talk about the QHD version not supporting enduro/optimus, but what about the new 4k version? FHD got edp output, maybe the high res version got tweaked as well?

Can anyone with a 4k display comment on this?

 

I have the QHD display, and while it is beautiful, I don't think the Intel HD 4600 chip is even recognized...which is to say that I have not seen any setting anywhere allowing for Optimus. Computer Management tree shows only NVIDIA Quadro K2100M under Display Adapters. No Intel.

 

This has already been confirmed for the QHD screen (3200x1800).

Do you have the 4k screen?

Yes, I have the newer 4k screen. On Dell's sales/marketing page for the M4800, it clearly states that nVidia Optimus is part of the machine. It doesn't say anything about only for the HD screen. I would love for it to be available on the 4k.

 

Is there a "Switchable Graphics" option in the Video settings in your BIOS? My FHD m4800 was shipped to me with this option unchecked, and it only used the discrete GPU out of the box.

 

I have a weird problem, not sure if anybody else faced this issue.

Today I installed Samsung 850 EVO msata on my workstation (I want to have both mSata SSD and HDD at the same time, but use SSD for windows and programs and use HDD as a drive for media/files).

I used samsungs cloning software to clone the HDD, before I did the cloning, I restored the Win 8.1 to factory, so it will be thin, also I did not have much on HDD anyways. The cloning was fast and smooth. Then I rebooted the PC and went to BIOS to change the boot sequence, which had the option as: 1. Windows boot manager 2. HDD
3. SSD, which I changed to: 1. Windows boot manager 2. SSD and removed/deleted the HDD option, but still it is booting into HDD and not SSD. Then I removed the Windows boot manager option itself and kept first and only option as SSD, even with that it is still booting into HDD.

If I go and disable the SATA0 (which is the HDD) under the drives, with above option it boots into SSD, but once I enable SATA0 (HDD), it boots into HDD (and not SSD) even though the first boot sequence has been set to SSD.

Can someone please let me what I am missing or if there is any issue with BIOS itself? I am running latest version A15.

My configuration:
M4800
i7-4910mq
16GB RAM
1 TB HDD
250GB SSD
BIOS version A15 (latest)

 

I just got my M4800 within the last week with the 4K display. There is no BIOS option to switch graphics. The option is not present.

On another note, the Intel Haswell architecture has a limitation with 4K displays. It can only display them at 30Hz. I'm not sure if this played a role in Dell's decision. But then again, why on the M4800 only?

 

It sounds like you are using UEFI boot which can be a little confusing, as you don't always get to pick the specific device to boot. If you press F12 at boot, you should be able to pick from a list of boot devices. If you tell it to boot from the SSD once, it might stick next time you reboot.

If that does not work, I recommend that you boot a USB/DVD device that allows you to manipulate the disk partitions. (Windows install media + command prompt / diskpart, or a Linux "live CD" with something like GParted.) Delete the UEFI/boot partition (or just all partitions) on the HDD and you shouldn't have to worry about this anymore.
