I am about to be the owner of an M4400, and I am already the owner of a 2560x1600 monitor. So, the basic question is this - is it possible to connect the two (at full res) without a dock?

Dell only has single link (up to 1080p) DisplayPort to DVI adapters. However, some sites (e.g., here) do sell dual-link ones. I assume that the DisplayPort on the M4400 would have to support dual-link for that to work, though... Would the M4400 work with one of those?

It says it is dual link but I doubt it. I would expect the price to be higher if it is a dual-link cable. Plus, the site looks so unprofessional. Did you buy and try the cable? Did it work for you?

You are going to need a monitor that can accept displayport input at 2580x1600res. There is no adaptor that works as you seek so far.

So there's no Displayport to anything adaptor that will output 2560x1600? You're saying if the display has a 2560x1600 res but no displayport in, it will not get the native res signal with any adapter out there?

What about the Dell 3007 with displayport?

The Dell 3007 does not have displayport. The 3008 does. I just went through this and upgraded to the 3008 to get the displayport and 2560x1600 res from my new E6400 laptop. Finally got rid of my power sucking workstation.

Searched long and hard for some sort of adaptor. The difficulty is that the signals are just not there. With the displayport the concept of video card is split between the computer and the monitor, its a data stream, not a video signal. Any adaptor to get from displayport to dual link dvi at that resolution would be an active device with a good bit of processing capability.

The upside is that the Dells with displayport outputs are among the first laptops on the market that can support 2560x1600 natively.

    Thanks for clarifying!

What about docks with DVI? Should all of those support dual-link or what?

If you feel like spending $150 to be a guinea pig you can try a DisplayPort->miniDisplayPort cable then into a Apple miniDisplayPort->Dual Link DVI adapter. Chances are it wont work, but it is > 0% that you would get with one of those cables as DisplayPort to Dual Link needs active conversion.

Is it even possible to get a DisplayPort to MiniDisplayPort adapter? The only one(s) I've seen have a male miniDisplayPort plug, meaning that you can't plug it into the miniDisplayPort to DVI adapter.

So, is it confirmed that none of the Dell port replicators have dual link DVI (including E-Port Plus)?

Try PMing Dell-Bill_B,I remember him answering similar question's in another thread, which I can't find because searching has been disabled.

I'm almost certain I remember [almost]they were talking about a dongle to enable displayport to dual link-DVI that was going to be out before the end of the year [last year],I guess they've since found it is actually not possible.

The e-port plus seems the same looking at user review's number's 4 and 5 here.http://reviews.dell.com/2341/430-3312/reviews.htm
