No the ZIF connector (cable) is fine as it works with a standard drive (Non SSD), that would leave it down to the ZIF connector on the SSD drive.

I just received a RunCore 128GB ZIF PATA drive and attempted to connect it to a Dell D430 laptop in place of the piece of crap drive that comes with the system. (We've had four drive failures in these laptops assumed to be heat-related.) Anyway, the RunCore drive is not recognized by the BIOS. It works fine via the external mini-USB cable, but not by the laptop. Even using a ZIF to PATA adapter and connecting it to a regular system fails to work.

Could this be a Dell issue? Or a problem with the RunCore PATA interface? I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this type of issue.

Well - here is what I got from the vendor I purchased it from - this is a real bummer:

    Dear My Digital Discount customers,

We regret to inform you that the latest batch of RunCore Zif drives, that were shipped out last week,
may possibly have a problem with the connection. We are currently investigating this issue further and we will be sure to keep you contacted with the latest updates as we get more details.

At this point, we ask that if you have had similar issues with your Zif drive to please be patient as we are looking to correct this issue as quickly as possible.

If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected].

We truly apologize for this inconvenience and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Sincerely,

    MDD

Does anyone know of other 1.8 inch SSD drive sources?

I was referring to the connector ON the drive rather than the cable. Looks like that ended up being a problem after all.

Mtron has a Mobi drive that works on the D420 perfectly, also Samsung has a slower 32GB SSD that works in the D series. You can find the Sammys on eBay and Mtrons here:

However, please check compatibility with RocketDisk before purchase. They are very knowledgeable and prompt.

Thank you for the compliment, much appreciated!! By all means, anybody reading this post, please send us an email to [email protected], with the exact make & model number of your Laptop/Netbook & we will let you know whether or not it is compatible with the Mtron 1.8" SSDs.

The Mtron 1.8" SSDs are SLC, which has great advantages over MLC in terms of performance, stability & reliability. 100MB/s Read & 100MB/s Write, with 0.1 ms Seek Time/Random Access Time.

I received a 'new' drive from mydigitaldiscount.com and the Dell D430 (with the latest A08 firmware) still does not recognize the 128GB SSD. I must say the connector really is flimsy on this device. Oh well....

mydigitaldiscount.com is now stating: "We were unfortunately informed by Runcore that this batch of drives will only work in the HP Mini. We were not aware of this when we shipped this batch out. We will cover the postage to have the drives returned to us and either issue you a full refund or put you in line for the next batch of drives (due in next week) that are compliant with all zif laptop models."

It's a shame that the SLC based SSDs aren't up to a higher capacity as the MLC NAND based RunCore SSD. Then the decision to scrap RunCore would be an easy one.
