I just ordered a 64 GB RunCore 1.8 inch ZIF drive to install in my D420, the drive works fine on a USB connection (it actually ships with a usb cable) but the laptop does not recognize it regardless of what I do - I am have used Acronis True Image to clone the drive, I have made an image and restored via usb, but regardless of what I do the computer will not recognize the drive when connected via the ZIF connector. I have checked and the ZIF connecter is connected properly.

    Any ideas?

How exactly is the drive not recognized? Is it a BIOS level thing or more like the whole AHCI mess where a Windows install will crap out halfway through?

As for the fan, you can probably control it with I8kfangui, but you should first probably try dusting out your vents, replacing the thermal paste, etc. If you've got like a U7600 or U7700 it's probably not that unusual to have the fan running often; from my experience those things aren't really all that ULV.

The bios does not ever recognize there is a hard drive in the unit - I am not sure the D420 supports a SSD?

In theory it should not matter. In fact, I think Dell shipped the D420 with an SSD option near the end of its lifetime. Since you're sure that you've connected it properly, I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. Possibly there is an incompatibility with this particular SSD, but again, anything should work in theory. Have you called up Dell and inquired about this issue in general?

I have not and I also want to go to the dell support forums as well. OK - latest update - I attempted to install the same drive in my Sony TZ 130 and it again was not found? So 2 computers and no drive found. Interesting.....

2 computers and no drive = dead SSD?

Wait! What model is the SSD again? Hmmm...it is ZIF PATA, not sure what else could be wrong...

Well - it is not dead - I forgot to mention earlier - it has the zif connector on one end and ships with a micro USB connector on the other - and it works fine as an external drive. So it is not dead - just will not work in two laptops - it has to be a drive detting or a driver issue - although there are no drivers posted on the runcore site.

The ZIF connector might be fried even if the drive is OK, something like a surge can do that. Recommend you RMA the drive. It isn't a driver issue as your BIOS is not seeing it.
