I have the quadro, so I'm using the latest official Nvidia drivers for the GPU. Sound wise, I'm also using the latest version listed for Vista 64-bit on the dell site...

This is also a clean install of Windows 7 RTM...and I never had this problem with the Windows 7 RC? So...what the heck?

    LOL!
Sorry, I don't know. I have exactly as you specified.
It could be a driver conflict on your side. I do have one issue that occurs very rarely, where the SRS setting are no longer applied. Opening the sound card panel, re-applies SRS. But, it NEVER crashed.

i too have the quadro (but running 191.00 driver from lv2go.com) and am using the latest audio driver off the dell site. no problems here.

sounds like a corrupted install on rtm possibly. did you check the md5/sha-1/crc hash of the image?

have you run dpc latency checker to see what its showing?http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

should show whether you are experiencing driver conflicts (not directly, but if it is red, that is likely why).

Well, here's what I've done differently than normal. I flashed a 8 gig USB drive to boot the Windows 7 installation using WinToFlash since I don't have any DVDs with me a the moment. That install went perfectly, and really fast too. Booted up, and then only installed a few drivers. That includes the webcam, bluetooth, touchpad, Nvidia driver, and the IDT Audio driver.

Windows sound would always fail after trying to adjust the volume with the IDT Audio Driver. I would have to restart, but it never ever worked. Using the default windows driver it works fine. So...I'm using the exact same drivers I used on the W7 RC...so why would there be a driver conflict now?

did you check the hash of the image to make sure it isn't corrupt? and have you checked the dpc latency? just tell us what the average dpc latency is, it might give us somewhere to start.

fwiw, there is a simpler method of using USB to install windows:: http://www.electronicpulp.net/2009/01/14/how-to-install-windows-7-with-a-usb-flash-drive/

Should I be running the DPC latency program with the IDT driver installed?

How are you getting these to install? When I try to install them I get a message that there are no drivers compatible with my current hardware.

You need to also insert the .inf file from the LV2GO site into the driver folder for it to install.

That maybe one of the newer drivers which doesn't require the .inf file. However, since the NVS 160 card isn't in that list...it just isn't supported. Frankly, you're probably better off using the latest official version of Nvidia.

Also, the MD5 checksum of my Windows 7 RTM Pro image is: 7b7af5fe3a01e9fd76de4dacb45a796b

I also ran the DPC checker, and without the IDT audio driver installed, it's generally in the green. With music playing, occasionally it'll go in the red once every so often.
