Oops I'm in Asia.. I stay in Singapore while their plant is in Penang, Malaysia. Takes about 12 hours or so by land transportation to get from the plant to SG. But I'm surprised too at the speed my laptop got out from the factory!

The HDD slots directly into a bay in the chassis and is held there by two screws so there's no way that any HDD noise will be blocked by the usual rubber mountings.

There is an acoustic management option in the BIOS which is worth a try.

I think it's ridiculous because the vibration is transmitted all the way until I get a humming sound. I have never encountered such a problem with any of my previous notebooks such as HP which use a bay as well, with 7200rpm drives mounted, without AAM. Guess I'll be remounting the HDD and see how it goes from there. :(

I'm from Taiwan. Placed my order for E6400 on 20th August. So far, I'm still stuck in the " ordere received " stage. Parts are still in China (due to shortage of some components dell refused to tell exactly). No estimated date for assembling, certainly no EST date for delivery. So far, there is only one customer received E6400. All the folks ordering E6400 (even back in mid-August) found their order on hold. One even told me that he placed the order on 23rd August and was told by Dell rep that the delivery will be 9th of October. All of you guys in the states and Europe are very lucky. I'm starting to wonder if Dell is going to sell off their assembling factory in Penang Malaysia (As Wall Street Journals reported that Dell are now looking for buyers for their assembling factory worldwide).

All you can do is to check if the screws are tight. There's not a lot of spare space in the slot but you might be able to put some electrical tape on the bottom of the drive next to the fixing screws so that when the screws are tightened there's something softer between drive and chassis.

I'm getting no vibration. The Samsung HM160HI was very quiet but I can hear some ticking noises from the Fujitsu MHZ2320BH I have now installed. Both these are 5400rpm.

Thanks for the tips. :) I took it apart including the hard drive bracket and put everything back.

Now I still remain with the vibration, and I've got a slightly loose bracket as well because of the bending when I took it out/put it back. Think I'll have to change a drive if I don't want the vibration. :p

I should be able to make a specific request like no Seagates?

I recieved my E6400 with XP on it. I did a clean install with Vista Business and now it sais the contactless smartcard reader is switched of in the security center (while the normal one is recognized). Am I missing a driver or do I need to switch something on?

And does anyone know where to get a contactless or normal smartcard so I can play around a bit?
