we've had roughly 50% of our E6400's need new batteries after less than a year. I really hope Dell just got a bad batch of them rather than it being a persistent issue.

And I hope Dell didn't dump those bad ones on the eBay marketeers! :D

Look in RMClock, or any other software with a battery monitoring component.

What size battery are the failure's coming from, one D630 Achilles heel is the 9-Cell battery. I even got a bad one when i first got my computer. Second one is still holding up ok though.

My E6400's 6 cell has no more wear now than it did after the first month or two (fully charged capacity is 54.989Whr). It did start to drop a few months back so I did a full discharge (ie run the computer on battery with the critical battery action disabled) and this recovered the lost capacity. My 6 cell is made by Samsung (RMClock also provides this info).

Same here. I've got about 55WHr, but mine's made by Sanyo. How often have you been running on battery, John?

I've probably only run the battery to nearly empty less than 50 times but it does a lot of service as a UPS ready for when the mains power goes off for shorter or longer periods and those interruptions must average one per day. I'm not a regular try-to-run-all-day-on-battery person (but I did buy a 9 cell battery in case the need arises).
