No vibration problems so far. I do have the suspect drive, but right now I'm in the middle of a reformat.

Make sure you install the dell system utility thing first. (before the chipset)

    Whoops. Any reason in particular?

I successfully burnt another DVD yesterday (which someone else could read) but it took two attempts to get Nero to see there was a blank disc in the drive.

I gave the problem a mention in the review since it improves the chances of someone taking note and addressing the problem. The disc which it couldn't read was a brand new Acrobat 9 Pro. Fortunately I had an LG GSA-E50L to hand which I plugged in to the USB port and that read the disc no problem.

My previous experiences with Liteon have been very good for both desktop and notebook burners, but maybe they need some further tweaks to get everything working right when squeezed down to 3/8" thick. Both burning and reading need some refinement.

My company purchased several E6400s and E6500s. Of the 7 E6500s, only one burner will not work. I've tried 4 E6400s, and so far all of them have issues burning. I've tried Roxio and Nero, both do not work. Dell sent me a replacement drive to try, but that does not burn either. Curiously, I've had a little success burning under the Vista image that came on the E6400. I've had no luck under XP though.

I'm to the point that I think the drives are just crap. When attempting to watch a DVD, it sounds like a helicopter about to take off. I was attempting to install Vista off a DVD and other office people came over to ask what all the noise was.

Hopefully Dell addresses this issue quick. Has anyone had any success?

Well, I have...but one other system issue has led me to get a return on this notebook.

So far I've burned one DVD no problem...and I'm hoping to burn another one tonight before I ship this notebook back to Dell.

Don't worry, I'll still be getting a E6400 so I'm not abandoning you guys!

Oh, the DVD burner's model number is DU-8A2S in case anyone wonders...

Does anyone have the DVD/CDRW drive on their E6400, the one that just reads DVDs? Does that have problems burning just regular CDs?

Same as mine. Does everyone have this one? Or is there another, less troublesome, burner that Dell also use and we can try to get.

And does the E6500 also use a 3/8" thick burner? Is it also the same model?

From what I have seen, the E6500s use the same model as the E6400s (DU-8A2S). We've had a little better luck with the E6500. Maybe it all depends on which bin they pull the drive from?
