Latitude 7450 Owners' Thread

Is it able to boot from PCIe attached SSD? During CES2018 Toshiba released RC100 NVMe SSD in 2242 size. Still it can be tricky to find it.

 

Anyone install the A18 BIOS for the meltdown/spectre fix? Have you noticed the CPU staying at 3.0/3.1GHZ constantly after the update, even when on battery power?

Anyone else update their BIOS?

I don't see the latest BIOS for download anymore? I only see A17 from Aug 2017.

Maybe they will fix this too.

 

Same problem on the xps 13. At least on my 2015 model. Already informed dell about it a week ago.

 

They pulled the A18 BIOS after intel reported random rebooting issues. I've been experiencing the random reboots as well as poor performance. Even though the CPU seems to be locked at 3.0/3.1Ghz, performance is significantly worse than it was before the bios update.
Last night I flashed back to A17 because A18 was so unstable. Now I can see the cpu jump between 0.8ghz and 3.1ghz based on load again. System is smoother and much more usable once again.

I did a bunch of experimenting while on A18. It seems if you boot the system while on AC (either on the dock or plugged in to AC) then the system will stay at 3.0/3.1Ghz and never lower the cpu speed. If you power up the system while on battery then it will adjust the cpu speed based on load, going between 0.8-3.1Ghz. However if you put the machine to sleep/hibernate then wake it back up while it's connected to AC then it will get stuck at 3.0/3.1Ghz again. So seems the A18 BIOS has some cpu speedstep management issues.

Definitely price out a battery. You can throw the laptop on a dock and get headphone/audio output from the E-Dock. As well as from the internal speakers. I'd be inclined to do the E7450 simply for the much nicer display than is on that Lenovo. Finger print sensor is probably irrelevant.

 

I agree. The difference in the display quality means there's no contest. The E7450 FHD panels have good viewing angles and the extra pixels improve legibility while most of the lower resolution displays have poor viewing angles and lower brightness. I'm more willing to compromise on performance than on display quality.

Not only that, but the audio jack for the E7450 is on a separate daughter-board attached to the motherboard. So if the poster is skilled with laptop disassembly, they could potentially just replace the daughter-board to regain headphone jack capability. And servicing the motherboard would not be required.
