I agree with what you wrote. These low-voltage CPU I think is sufficient for my needs. I doubt that in 2-3 years, when it comes out the successor of Windows 8 operating system, these cpu may not be appropriate (and a faster cpu might be better), but I realize that this type of reasoning in the computer industry did not make much sense.

What I would like to understand is whether the model 5540 has a different chassis than 3540, I do not think so looking at the Dell website. Do you think that 5540 has a better quality chassis? What do you mean with "better-made device" and with "better durability features"? I see no relevant difference besides cpu and video card looking at italian Dell website, but maybe I'm wrong. If the 5540 had the HDMI connector (but I do not think), I'd take that.

Umm, did you not see my post above? I listed additional differences. You can also look at their respective manuals, which often have a lot of pictures including pictures of the insides.

There may be differences between the configurations on the various countries? If you see above (message where I reported the specifications of laptop that Dell offered me) 5540 has 6 cell battery. I have to ask Dell about HDMI.

Understood. The US version also comes with a 6 cell battery, but the point I was making was that it has the option of a 9 cell (even if you have to buy it separately). The 3540 does not have that option.

    The 3540 manual is here...

The configurations may change between regions, but the specifications don't. The specifications for each model is listed near the end. The 5540 has HDMI, no matter what region you buy it in.

Thanks for links. I'm not sure that specifications listed on manuals are correct. In fact I read that 3540 has NVIDIA GeForce GT740M or AMD Radeon HD 8850M graphic card, while for italian configuration there is a AMD Venus Pro 2GB. Furthermore maximum resolution 1366 x 768 pixels for 3540 is not true: (in Italy) 3540 can be also FHD.

Dell sale manager sent me an offer but the informations are very poor. I just contact him by telephone, but he was not able to give me informations I requested. I will try again.

I thought that 5540 and 3540 had the same chassis. But as you said, 5540 seems to have a more robust and professional chassis. This is good for me.

About viewing angles, on 5540's manual I read that Operating angle is 0° to 135°. Dell offers two types of display: with normal and with wide viewing angle. This 135° value is for the wide viewing angle? I think that 5540 laptop have only wide angle, but I'm not sure.

The AMD Venus Pro and Radeon HD 8850M are the same card/chip.

Indeed, Dell manuals often have errors. The 3540 is available with a 1080p anti-glare screen in North America as well.

I'm afraid I can't help you with information on the viewing angles.

I read the review thanks. At the end I ordered a Dell 5540, with these features:
    Intel Core i5-4300U Processor
Dell FHD (1920x1080) Wide View LED-backlit LCD Panel
    4GB (1x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3L
500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive with 8GB Flash
    8X DVD+/-RW Media Bay Drive
6-cell (65Wh) Lithium Ion battery with ExpressCharge

I decided to add a SSD. Do you suggest to leave the DVD player or replace it with the SATA disk? To install the SATA disk on the position of DVD player, what adapter have I to buy?
I read that SSD can have 2 different thicknesses: 7,5 and 9 mm. What is better for 5540 laptop?

I was unable to locate the right caddy for the E5540, but I hope some others on here can chime in on this one. As for size, I think 9mm is the standard size. If an SSD comes in 7mm, then it usually ships with an adapter to make it 9mm should you choose to.

Otherwise, congrats on your new laptop!

    Hello, guys!
Im looking forward to buy the dell latitude 3540, and here in brazil there are basically two versions:

    1- i5 4200U with 6gb ram
    2- i7 4500U with 8gb ram (this one costs around 180usd more)

So what do you think about getting the i7 version, does it really improve system overall performance compared to the i5?
I guess in overall use there is not that much of a difference, but im not sure about it in a gaming scenario, and thats why im asking :)

    Thanks in advance!
