if you're travelling a lot, you cant beat the dell warranty. next business day support in IIRC 96 countries. especially if its your main machine, you will want that peace of mind.

lenovo used to offer similar levels of support, but its not available anymore

i hope Dell offers me a comparable discount as Lenovo.. I've been reading about the ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 graphics card on the Lenovo forum and it seems like there are driver issues when using 3D softwares like Maya, Solidworks etc.. Users have been complaining for over a year with no help from Lenovo or ATI it seems.

    accesskb, I have owned both - a W500 and my current M4400.

I was a die hard IBM fan and really wasn't a fan of Dell's until I received my M4400. I actually got the M4400 after the W500 and ended up keeping the M4400 due to the Nvidia card, backlit kb and most of all the RGB LED display. If you use the display on the laptop a lot; there is no comparison. That has to be my only three gripes between the two.

BTW, the W500 had a 2.8 T9600, ATI Video and a 5300 wireless card, other than that they were pretty much identical in specs.

btw what did you use your laptops for? I've heard good things about both, but also bad things about the W500 from people who use it mainly for 3D (Maya, Revit etc). It has mainly to do with graphics card driver issues and lack of support from both ATI and Lenovo.

thnx will look into it... yeah truth is I can get a Dell XSP with Duo 3.0GHZ processor, 8GB RAM etc for less than the M4400 but I dont know if I'd like to have a toyish/plastic looking laptop.

same design centre in yamoto japan, still most of the same staff. so its more like IBM lives on under new identity rather than IBM RIP.
