Just because it has a 64-capable CPU, does NOT make it a 64-bit capable system. If you pull the hardware manual for the system, look at the data paths. Everything needs to be 64-bit.

Most laptops these days come with a real nice 64-capable CPU. The path to the CPU from the motherboard is only 32-bits, hence you CANNOT install a 64-bit OS as the system does not support the CPU tag of "lm" or LONG-MODE -- needed for full 64-bit support.

Here's a question. I know a few people that tried to run 64bit Vista and XP on a lenovo thinkpad. There were no drivers. Does Dell have drivers for 64 bit OS?

    hey Iceman & Others

Sry to bring this topic up once again.

I have placed an order for the Vostro 1510 (N Series, with DOS Pre-installed). Have configured it with 4 GB RAM.

Having spoken to Customer support, I am now being told that I will not be able to run only a 32 bit Operating system over it. 64-bit is simply not in because the motherboard doesnt support it. Does it make sense?

I note & understand the following:

    a. Its T5870 Proc which supports a 64 bit architecture.

    b. I am planning to run a 64 bit OS to take advantage of my system's 4 GB capacity. A 32 bit OS will only help me address about 3.25-3.5 GB RAM thereabouts, if I am not wrong ...... please correct me if I am.

No Motherboard specifications available at this point.

Kindly help me on this ASAP.

    Best regards,

    Sandy
