So I am planning to buy a Vostro 1400 with some minor changes to the ram(3gb), and the graphics card(128mb Geforce 8600). I am wondering if it is a 64 bit laptop? If it is then can I play WoW? I mean I thought 32 bit was more compatible with everything. I still want to be sure before I buy since playing WoW will be one of the main things that I will do with this laptop.

Ok so you left me more confused without giving the answer. Can I run WoW on that computer? and how about other applications? will the 64bit make life difficult for me?
I mean my real question will the 64bit create more problems for me with software and driver compatibility?

what are you really asking about? the processor or the os?

a 64 bit processor can run 64 bit os. if i were you, just get a 64bit processor for your laptop and install a 32 bit os. just upgrade to a 64bit os if you really need it. the vostro can run WOW as long as you have a decent graphics card

If you have 64-bit machine, you can still run 32-bit software or games, like WoW. 64-bit should not make life difficult for you. It is pretty common now, and so there's drivers for it everywhere. Especially for Dell.

Back to what boypogi were saying, if you get a 64-bit processor, then you will have a 64-bit system. Core 2 Duo is a 64-bit CPU.

To make things straight. When you buy your vostro 1400 from dell, it will come with 32bit windows even though you have a 64bit processor. The processor will only run as a 32bit one unless you go and install a 64bit version of windows.

Vista 64 has no problem running native 32 bit applications, WOW will be fine.

Also remember that just because you have a 64 bit capeable cpu, doesnt mean you have to use a 64 bit OS. Core2s are just fine with 32 bit OS'es.

So if I install XP 32 bit on the vostro then I guess I won't have any problems with installing any applications since most applications are 32bit compatible right? I mean the 64 bit processor that I have in the vostro is an added advantage for later use when I want to shift to a 64bit operating system.
So all in all I am assuming the 64bit processor doesnt matter as long as I have 32 OS installed right?

Another question about the display. What do you think should I choose just XGA or XGA+ for $40 more? I mean if XGA+ really makes a difference then I dont mind shelling out $40.

Thats incorrect, a core2 chip will get you a 64 bit CAPEABLE system, you need a 64 bit capeable cpu + a 64 bit OS to have a 64 bit system. If your running a 32 bit OS, your running a 32 bit system, doesnt matter if the chip is 64 bit capeable or not..

The Vostro 1400 is a solid computer to run WoW at 1280x800 at decent settings.
