Graphics Card upgrade for M6800 ?

Well, I don't think so I will go with P5000, especially that I couldn't find any price for it (only desktop models)... but I'm guessing is at least double the price compared to 980M... Anyway, if you know a place that sells it, I would appreciate a link.
Thank you for pointing this detail... as it seems, there are A LOT of small quirks to be aware of, in this upgrade...

 

Did you try using a Pascal GPU in the M6700, with Optimus enabled? It seems like if Optimus is on, it shouldn't matter if the card requires eDP, as the display output is handled by the iGPU.

I've only heard from one other person who has tried this, and he told me that he was not able to fit a GeForce 1060 in the M6700 because of issues with fitting it to the heatsink properly, so he was not even able to try it .....

 

Yes i tried it, but i did not do fresh OS installation. I just plug in existing OS with UEFI, secure boot off, legacy boot off. There is display of Dell logo, can go into bios, but no more after that. Just stuck at Dell logo, no prompt of unable to find bootable media. I did not try further because my CPU heatsink screw hole thread has damaged after frequent dismantling and i have to use a custom longer screw to secure it. M6700 design is bad for GPU replacement since CPU heatsink needs to be removed before GPU heatsink, M6800 has improved the design by reversing this sequence.

I am getting every small parts of M6800 to assemble into a working laptop, eDP, now still waiting for some parts to arrive should complete in next 3 days. Will install new OS on it hopefully it will work.

any chances to fit a 1060 on m6800?

 

The GeForce 1060 requires eDP, so you will have to make sure that you have an eDP model M6800 and not an LVDS one. Otherwise, it could possibly fit if you find a standard sized GeFrorce 1060 MXM card (these aren't hard to come by). As for whether it will actually work, I haven't heard of anyone who has tried it yet...

 

Yeah, but perhaps the Optimus support also needs to be enabled in the vBIOS and it might not be there by default?

 

I suppose it's possible that there are vBIOS variants that do not have Optimus support, but I know the 1060 and 1070 do support Optimus (It's out there on other systems). In any case, it seems like the system should be able to boot, and if the card does not support Optimus, it will just error out in device manager. @iieeann says that it hung at the Dell logo during POST... so there must be something in the Dell BIOS that disagrees with at least the card that he tried.

 

P5000? Nice, Looking forward to see how it works on the M6800. Where did you get it and how much it went for, if it's not a problem? I have an M6700 with the eDP screen so I'm definitely considering one as a future upgrade if they can be found for a reasonable price.

The 7720 doesn't have Optimus (right?) so there's no need for its support in the Dell P5000 vBIOS, I'd presume. Since the physical designs are different, not sure if it could be flashed with e.g. an Alienware 1070 vBIOS.

7720 does have Optimus, but you can switch it off in the BIOS of you so choose. I'm sure that Dell's P5000 supports Optimus.
