Andy, what is your chipset temperature (as measured by I8kfanGUI)? This temperature seems to be the one that triggers the fan most often on E6400.

I have a 6400 bought from the outlet store about 3 weeks ago. No heat issues here. The palm rests do get a little warm, but nothing out of the ordinary. FYI, I'm running a T9500 with Nvidia graphics card.

akwit, from the new thread you created, can I assume that your statement that "Dell finally addressed the heat issues" is wrong?

I'm not bashing you here: I would also get quite excited if I thought my heat problems were solved :)

although my original heatsink & fan work fines, the technician changed for me when I ask Dell to check the CPU whine problem. Of coz, it doesn't help the problem, but anyway, this is the new heat sink & fan pictures.

there are three photos, as you can see, the metal bar (copper??) is wider than the original one, and the fan vanes are different as well.

    update: upload pics

Seems that you got the Nvidia heatsink despite having the Intel graphics. That makes the laptop a bit heavier, but it should also be slightly cooler.
