Never thought the day would come (and hopefully im not writing this in haste), but the new E6400 I just received, which is my 3rd unit in 7 months-FINALLY WORKS.

More specifically, I had major hear dissipation issues with my past two machines-both of which ran on T9400 dual cores and the Nvidia 160m.
The machine was a nightmare. The laptop ran super warm when docked and the fan was RELENTLESS. This warm environment eventually led to the degradation of some of my hardware, which in-turn, resulted in a malfunctioning laptop.

I dont know what theyve done, but the computer now stays cool and the fan rarely goes into its highest speed, even when ive got some cpu intensive programs running on two external monitors. More importantly, when it does go on, its on for 10 minutes tops and then SHUTS OFF! You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear the fan actually turn off on its own...lol.

I killed DELL on this issue for months and it seems a hallelujah is in order as it appears they have addressed and fixed this problem with these newer units.

IF YOU OWN A LATITUDE AND ARE EXPERIENCING FAN ISSUES, SEND IT BACK FOR A NEW ONE. DO NOT DO WHAT I DID, WHICH WAS JUST TRYING TO LIVE WITH THE ISSUE (AND NOISE). THE PROBLEM WILL PERSIST AND WORSEN!

    That's good news.

What BIOS version is on the new one?

I might be interesting to take of the bottom and see if there are any changes to the cooling system compared with, for example, the photo in my E6400 review.

    akwit,
You know, while I'm not a religious guy....I just might have to go to church and light a candle this week-end. Glad for you.

    John,
While I understand you're 'moderately inquisitive' which you may consider changing to 'more than moderately inquisitive' :) I think the guy should finally just enjoy his quiet notebook without *tinkering* which might end up leading to other issues.

one screw to take the cover off and take a high-res clear photo with the flash on wouldnt be tempting much trouble IMO...

    A12.

As a result of receiving a working laptop, I have now become religious so thanks :D

As to the more inquisitive John Ratsey; I would have jumped out my window due to DELL issues long ago if it werent for John's help. The least I can do is take a quick photo.
Before I do so, can you guys please tell me the OPTIMAL way of doing this as I do not want mess anything up.
Lastly, how do I get the photo on the site? I dont have any hosting...

Upload the image to a service like imgshack, or something like that. Then just link to the photo.

Also...I'm pretty sure most E6400's fans are supposed to run on high for a bit until the temperatures go below the threshold and then turn off. At least mine does that so far...

You can attach a picture directly to a post if it is not too big.

I have a couple of meetings over the next 4 or 5 hours; check back after that time-I will try and post a couple of pics.

I too have a new e6400, and I have never actually heard the fan turn on.
My system has a P9500 and the Nvidia graphics.

    At idle:
    Core #0 is 30 degrees C
    Core #1 is 30 degrees C
GPU core is 48 degrees C

Edit: My cpu temp jumps anywhere from 30 to 32 C at idle
