    Hi again :)

I thought that IVAR wrote, that the ZIF-cable he used (the one that he had linked to on ebay) didn't work.

The ZIF converter cable as shown in the ebay link definitely does work as I've tried it on 2 different mini IDE drives in my X1. The converter board comes with 2 cables, one for ZIF type 1 and one for ZIF type 2. I don't know which is which but one is thicker than the other. Some drives use the thinner cable and some use the thicker. My Mtron MOBI 3000 SSD used the thinner of the two cables. I learned that by trial and error as the first cable I tried sticking into the drive did not fit (My MOBI is a ZIF1 model. Both types exist).

So 16gb SDHC cards do not work at all? I thought 16gb is supported in Windows XP SP3. Channelv are you running XP SP3 by chance?

I noticed there was an updated Dell Notebook System Software download:
    Release Date: 11/20/2007
    Version: 5.3.3, A28 Other Versions
    Download Type: Utility
    File Format: Hard-Drive
    File Size: 10 MB

Under "Fixes and Enhancements," it mentions support for SDHC cards over 4gb. Someone who was access to a 16gb card try it please...

This is the best laptop I've ever owned. It's a classic!

I'm using Vistas Ultimate SP1 with all updates. It should support SDHC (the operating system itself that is), but the reader on the X1 doesn't seem to. It didn't work for me. Someone with XP SP3 chime in.

I meant the zif cable (shipped with zif to ide micro-ata adaptros) when insterted to the
zif connector on the X1 motherboard, not the zif connector of the HDD. :)

guys i've been looking for a forum like this for years.
thank god i've finally come across one! :)
I've had a x1 since they first came out over here in Ireland(years and years ago , well 4 years ago), it still works perfect no hassle with it ever, except the battery of course but i bought a new refurbished one there during the summer for 50 euro. bargain!
I'm the envy of all my mates with this laptop. its brilliant.
right so this morning i've been catching up on this form the beginning to the end and i'm going for it; i'm going to upgrade the memory from 1.2 gb to the 2 gb and the hd from the old 4200rpm 60gb to a new 32gb ssd.

    now here's a question. prices?

what price did u guys pay for the ssd's?

i'm checking for the same as most of u guys are using the "Mtron MOBI 3000 PATA 32gb SLC SSD drive". i'm finding £156 sterling so thats 186 euro at the moment.

ALSO some of u guys were asking what would be a nice updated replacement for the beloved x1, my suggestion would be to check out the dell latitude E4200 or the E4300. lovely little things, i'll put them on my "I wish Christmas list"

yeah so if any can tell me the price they paid i'd be grateful, cheers!!

I have a spare 4GB Sandisk Extreme III SD so I thought I'd try to use it for ReadyBoost to take some load off the slow HDD. However it fails the ReadyBoost test. When I test with HDTune the average speed is good. Anyone get a SD card to work?

    More good news!!!

I just found out that it is possible to overclock (and underclock) Latitude X1
with the latest versions of setFSB program: http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/

Chose ICS954201BGLF as a clock generator (PLL).
For some reason it does not show FSB correctly
(use CPU-Z) - it shows all values equal to zero - but you can change FSB with its help. I was able to change the max processor clock between 0.96--1.4 GHz,
but haven't run long stability tests yet.

Please be careful and don't blame me if you burn your processor.

Does it lock in the selected clock speed when idle? For example the CPU runs at 600mhz when idle and 1.1ghz when doing tasks. Is it always running at the selected clock speed? If it bursts into the selected speed and reduces at idle, then it probably wouldn't hurt to overclock.
