hendrimp, the PM system doesn't allow you to use it if you are a new user. I imagine it's to protect the users from spamming.

    ivar, while I don't own a X1, I wouldn't mind seeing a how-to. I would particularly be interested in where you located a 1.8" 5400RPM drive (or did I assume wrong and it's a 4200RPM?). I am looking for a reasonably priced one for my D430.

X300 has a usual 2,5" drive. I have customized a couple of them I bought on ebay for my friends.

I spoke above about Samsung SpinPoint N2 120GB 1.8″ HDD. I was able to buy it only in Switzerland, but that was half a year ago. You can also find 120GB 1.8" disks inside some
commercial external 1.8" USB drives, for a little higher price.

You will also need the IDE to ZIF adapter like this one
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10887
(which is sold together with 2 ZIF cables, only one of which is the right one, the one for "toshiba", not the one for "hitachi"). Fortunately, the disk with the adapter fit rather well under the keyboard of X1.

If someone will really try to make it, please don't hesitate to ask me for more details here.

It is still 4200rmp, but Samsung 1.8" disks are really fast. I get 30 MB/s in benchmarks. The price of mine (1/2 yrs ago) was 120 EUR in Switzewrland.
But the only offer I found in Germany now is for unreasonable 399 EUR:

One can also use Toshiba 1.8" 120-160GB hdd, but Samsung ones have better specs in terms of noise, heat and speed.

What kind of RAM chip are you guys using ?? I just bought a 2gig Kingston SODIMM, installed it but immediately got a memory read/write error when I turn the machine on. It won't even get to the BIOS screen.

    I bought a KVR533D2S4/2G chip.

You cannot use more than 2GB of RAM in the D430.

It should be OK -it is SO-DIMM DDR2 PC2-4300, as it should be.

Maybe the stick itself is defect???

I love my X1, and would gladly upgrade it virtually regardless of price. The options I've read here so far are:

    (1) Memory
    (2) SSD

For those of you who have tried these things, which helps the X1 boot faster? Any other memory stick models tried since the first post? The only Samsung 32 GB SSD I've found is 2.5"; does this fit into the slot for the X1's native hard drive?
