I just ordered a refurb e4300 from dell with vista. I want to run 64-bit vista. Is there a way to get the disk free from dell or somewhere else versus buying it?

Just call up Dell. I'm sure they'll be willing to ship it to you for free.

I was able to do it...though my initial unit did have some issues. You have to press them for it then.

Dell was reluctant to send me a 64-bit disk for my Studio 15, since it came with 32-bit, but after about 20 minutes they agreed on the condition that I acknowledge that they will not provide support for issues related to the operating system.

Once I got them to agree, they shipped it overnight and it was at my dorm the next afternoon, free.

If for any reason Dell refuses to send you the disk, you can order one from Microsoft directly, for a small fee. Just make sure it's the same version (e.g. Home Premium 64-bit if you have Home Premium 32-bit), and your license key should work.

I'll try again late then, or maybe after my laptop actually arrives. The second time I called I got transferred from customer service to tech support then to software sale, then I just hung up

Actually tech support can help you. I sent a request for a 64 bit vista disk to tech support via email. I explained that my system was slow on boot up and shut down. I told them I was not given a disk and wanted to do a clean install. Within a few hours, they sent an email telling me they would sent me a 64bit vista disk, also they explained Dell does not offer support for the 64bit vista. I'm ok with that.:)

    Edit
I don't know if matters, but email went to the small business support.
