The max resolution over (single-link) DVI is 1920x1200. You need a DisplayPort cable.

just wanted to chime in to agree with extide's (and others') point. FHD on my 15", let alone a 17", looks exceedingly crisp and isn't difficult to read at normal viewing distances. i do use the occasional 'ctrl + scroll wheel' when there's a wall of text or i'm feeling lazy, but i never strain to see anything. as for your OP--FHD + WQHD = ~5.8M beautifully fine pixels, especially on those displays.

All the above. It would be like buying a performance car and outfitting it with common all season tire. It just doesn't fit.

I checked with Dell tech support. For the record, the limitation is with the card, not the connector. The Nvidia card only supports higher resolutions through its DP (and maybe HDMI (didn't check)) outputs.

Speaking of monitors, has anyone used their Precisions to output to an HD widescreen TV/monitor? How does the picture look, and what's the largest screen?

After all, these laptops were created first and foremost as conference laptops, and I'd like to know how well the new technological advancements work.

I have access to a 70" screen at my institution and I was wondering if I could use it instead of the poor resolution overhead.

From time to time I have mine hooked up to a 47" 1080p TV via HDMI. The resolution is the same as the internal screen. Looks great on the HDTV though, no complaints.

"After all, these laptops were created first and foremost as conference laptops..."

With all due respect, this is simply not true. The marketing as well as the design and features of 'these laptops' - presumably Mx700s - is for the field, the desktop, the airport, the oil field, the photo shoot, and more including but arguably not primarily the conference room.

Ah yes, true these days, but I was referring to this line of laptop. Their humble beginnings spurred from the conference room. They only recently acquired sufficient power to go high tech.

And they are still excellent if you need to bring power to a conference room for a demonstration. ;)

I can confirm that the Dell Precision M6700 (with AMD FirePro M6000) supports 3840x2160 resolution @ 30 Hz using the HDMI 1.4 port on the back of the M6700. It also supports 3840x2160 @ 30 Hz in conjunction with the "Dell E-Port Plus 240W Advanced Port Replicator with USB 3" docking station (Dell SKU / part number 331-7947) if you plug a DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor into one of the DisplayPort ports on the docking station (the docking station doesn't have an HDMI port, so if your display needs HDMI input you need the adaptor, which is inexpensive). I am currently using that configuration (M6700 + docking station, DisplayPort to HDMI convertor) in conjunction with the Seiki Digital SE39UY04 38.5" 4K Ultra HD display. I have been using this configuration for about a month now, and this is a great workstation setup. Previously I was used to using a Dell 30" 2560x1600 display, but a 30" monitor feels small now that I have moved to the 38.5" 3840x2160 display.
