What are the maximum external monitor resolutions supported by the Dell M4700/M6700 Workstations? Will the M4700/M6700 support the maximum resolution of its installed graphics adapter (for example, the NVIDIA Quadro K1000M supports 3840 x 2160 pixels)? I am considering buying a Dell 4700/6700 with a standard HD display (1366 x 768) and would like the option of connecting it to a Dell U2711 monitor with PremierColor having a 2560 x 1440 resolution.

You should be able to output 2560x1440 via DisplayPort with no problem. The DisplayPort and HDMI are both the latest spec (1.2 for DisplayPort and 1.4 for HDMI) — these ports actually supposedly support 4K output (3840x2160); I personally don't have such a display to try it with. :p

Note that any display below the standard "full HD" display sold with these systems has reduced brightness as well as reduced resolution. Unless you are absolutely strapped with your budget I would suggest getting the "full HD" display at a minimum, it's not an expensive upgrade.

Thanks for the feedback. For the M6700, the Dell PremierColor display costs an additional $400 and requires an upgrade to a better graphics adapter:
17.3" UltraSharp™ FHD (1920x1080) Premier Color IPS RGB Anti-Glare, Premium Panel Guarantee [add $400.00]
    NVIDIA® Quadro® K3000M with 2GB GDDR5 [add $300.00]

I am also concerned that the higher resolution screen FHD (1920x1080) for the M4700/M6700 may be too high a resolution for easy viewing of text for word processing, etc. I also understand that the M4700/M6700 screen resolution cannot be reduced down to HD.

Yes the resolution on the M4700 & M6700 can go both up and down. Up to 4K and down to 800 x 600.

You can always lower the resolution, but it may not look as crisp.

1920x1080 on a 17" screen is not hard to read at all, in fact many people, including me have 1080p on a 15" screen.

i personnaly have the 17" ips rvb on my m6700 set up at 1920x1080 and it is not difficult to read. I' even set w7 desktop to "small icon" and it's still very readable. if you leave it to normal size it's perfectly readable.

Do you have the option to change resolution to 1600x900?

Well, yeah, but you'd have to be crazy to want to do that in anything outside of gaming, you'll have to deal with pixel interpolation which means a fuzzy image.

Well you can always get a cheap lesser screen and keep it on the side for text? Remember, these are workstation bread for speed and power. Any old netbook can do text, so don't want to let that stand in your way of making the right decision.

What about with a DVI cable? I can't seem to select higher than the 1920x1080. Do I need to get a DP cable?
