I don't now where you found different information but both screens has LVDS. See below:

    LG Display LP156WF4-SLB1 Overview - Panelook.com
    LG Display LP156WF4-SLB3 Overview - Panelook.com

The connector of the removed and the new screen was exactly in the same position.
Only interesting thing that dual channel LVDS cable was a little longer than single channel, but there was more than enough space to manage unnecessary cable.
Probably original Dell FHD and HD+ screens has different position according to the LVDS connector.
I can make pictures tomorrow if you need.

    Hello everyone,

I bought my Latitude e6540 last year. As already pointed out multiple times in this thread, I have overheating problems when playing games : for the first 10-15 minutes, games like Civ5 run perfectly (constant 60 fps), then fps drops drastically to the point it's unplayable. I understand that my laptop can't run the latest games on ultra settings, but I am very disappointed that it cannot even handle properly a game which came out 3 years before on default settings (everything on normal/low).

It seems that my overheating problem got worse with time (I could play LoL on max settings with no problem last year, now I just uninstalled it because the fps drops 20 min into the game on normal/low settings), even though I had the thermal paste replaced and the fan cleaned recently. It might be due to the BIOS updates...

So I was looking for a solution. Since it's an overheating problem I was thinking about getting a cooling pad, but I have never had one so I don't know whether it would be really efficient... I was also thinking about getting my BIOS back to a previous version since it worked better in the past... but once again I'm not sure if that is the right thing to do. Lastly I saw that people on this thread got their e6540 exchanged for a M4600, That seems very interesting but I don't know at all who to contact nor what to say to them...

If anyone here could help me, that would be great !

I can game without throttling if I either disable Turboboost, or limit processor to 99% in power profile - both will limit the CPU to 2.7Ghz.

I also own a E6540 since a while but I am having serious problems with VGA. When I connect a VGA monitor to it I regularly see scanlines on that monitor. Anyone experiencing the same problem? IT gave me a new version (came in last week) to try that one but although it's not that bad as on my previous one but I still see vibrating lines when connecting a VGA monitor to it :/

Has anyone else noticed that the E6540 USB 3.0 "Super Speed" jacks are not providing anything faster than USB2.0? THere is a thread discussing this issue on the dell forums here:

E6540 - "this device can perform faster...connect it to a super speed usb 3...blah blah" - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

    Heres a quick recap:

Whenever I connect a usb 3.0 device to a port in my E6540 I get the infamous notification:"this device can perform faster...connect it to a super speed usb 3...blah blah".

My laptop has 16 GB ram. CPU is i7-4800MQ. Win 7 64.

In order to spare useless suggestions, please note that...

    1. My bios is up to date

    2. All system drivers are up to date (Dell & Intel latest versions)

    3. All usb cables are OK. That notification appears with every device I connect - external HD's & flash drives.

    4. All external devices are USB 3.0. Please don't ask me to recheck it.

    5. All usb ports on this laptop are blue and Dell swears they are USB 3.0.

    6. USB 3.0 controller in bios setup is enabled.

    7. Yeah - I've already uninstalled all usb devices in Windows Device Manager & let the OS reinstall them.

    8. Sure - I have downloaded UsbTreeView V2.4.3.0 and it insists on "high speed" and refuses to confirm "super speed"' i.e. it agrees with that abominable Windows notification.

    9. Transfer speeds confirm that notification as well.

If anyone can verify that their machine is also having this issue, please add your voice to the post on the dell forum to try and get some traction on this issue. Thanks!

    Vern

Does this always work? I just ordered the e6540 and am a bit concerned now with all the overheating discussion. What temperatures do you get with setting it at 2.7Ghz max? Also, is there a way to downclock or disable the AMD GPU altogether if it's not needed? Thanks.

My config is the i7-4800mq and 8790m.

Ctrl+wheel zoom has nothing to do with the laptop and nothing to do with the OS, it's all about the web browser or application you're using. I can zoom on my M4800 running Linux using ctrl-wheel, as long as I'm using Chrome.

My laptop keeps repeating keystrokes. Like if I type the word "tiger" it will come out "ttigggerrr" This is hugely annoying.
I already went to Control Panel --> Keyboard --> Repeat Delay and set it to "Long". This does NOT fix it. It is almost like it's a hardware repeat glitch, not a software/OS repeat config issue.
    Anyone have any ideas?
