So my guy got my machine that I sent and ran tests and said it is normal for the machine to throttle when it gets too hot from the high cpu/gpu stress and that is okay because it is the system working like it should. So he admits the machine can't handle the load and throttles, but that it is okay because it isn't a high end gaming machine. What a crock. Again he offers a refund.

I'd point out the CPU is advertised as operating at at least 2.7GHz and yours isn't, and demand escalation till satisfaction.

take your money at this point.. That's what I wanted and they couldn't do it. The only reason I got a M3800 is because I'm not associated with that business account any more and I got a decent rep for a moment. He ended up flaking out on me and screwing everything up again, but I did receive the M3800 at least. Sending the E6540 back tomorrow. It took this new guy over a week to get me a shipping label. Ridiculous. I'm selling the M3800 and running faaaar away from Dell.

I've still got that spare E6540 bottom cover that I drilled holes in, as well as a spare magnesium frame. If any of you are stuck with this machine, you're welcome to both for the cost of shipping. Just PM me, first come first serve. Continental US only, sorry!

Support escalation hasn't got back to me, nor have I received a reply from the 'Michael Dell' email address.

I'm on the phone right now to get this sorted out. :(

EDIT: No dice; I'll send another email to the escalation department I guess along with another one to [email protected]

EDIT 2: Hopefully my executive email bomb to the addresses I listed a month or so back will help.

Yeah, I'm not the original purchaser, so I have a bad feeling I'm going to be an E6540 user long term.

Not thrilled. I'll have to look into fabricating a better cooling system all on me onesies. I might want to take that bottom cover off your hands.

Forge, by any chance did you buy your E6540 though the Outlet? Maybe the warranty hasn't transferred to you, my machine was still registered to the original German company who owned it (luckily they did buy a 3 year Pro support contract...).

I said I'd take a refund if they went by the current value of the machine if I was to order one new, but not going to happen. While I do appreciate they even offer a refund option it really bothers me that the guy admitted the machine throttles, but states that is fine for it to do.

Bought from an Outlet scalper via eBay. Just wanted to get something like my current E6530, but with a nicer i7 quad instead of my i5 dual, and something servicable instead of the NVS 5200, which is rather tame.

Instead I got a horrible throttlemonster. I did get the warranty transferred, but based on wording from the first CSR I talked to, it sounds like they'll want to credit the same card that purchased, which would be the eBay scalper.

Edit: In case it becomes useful to someone later, I started a more generic conversation about what is and isn't acceptable WRT throttling in OEM machines.
