Still stock cause not sure I'm keeping the machine so don't want to mess around with it.

Second compression test went well. No drop in processor speed except for the little fluctuation as above. Doing third, longer test now. Temp up to 87 degrees Celcius. Will see if it throttles at 90+.

I did not notice any downclocking when gaming, the heat comming up from the vent seems reasonable to me...
Does anyone know if there it's possible to overclock the CPU and/or GPU? I used MSI Afterburner, but did not notice any differende in framerates... Most of the time when I play a game it's not very long, about 30 minutes max.
All-in-all I'm happy with this unit. I use it for work about 9 hours a day it's "on". And after work I use it for some gaming and some surfing, so it's used about 12 hours a day I would say...

I was coming to update this morning.

I ran 6 consecutive compression tests lasting about 44 minutes each. CPU topped out at 90C and I did not experience any further throttling. Processor was typically about 3500MHz throughout.

I'm not sure what would happen under gaming conditions but I'm going to see how this machine continues to hold up.

Sounds hopefully promising then. BTW, What you think happened, during your archive test ?
P.S. Another interesting pc, on specs and reviews, so far is the HP ZBook 15, Any thoughts/experience checking this one out ?

I don't think even Dell wants these - I've been trying to return my two machines since before Christmas and the person handling the case is either never in the office or doesn't respond.

    Turnbull2000,

When you get a chance ....

Just the above percentages would be good enough, the screenshot is not really necessary. I am just trying to understand how the percentages are derived to represent your cap of 2.7Ghz.

Hi Joseph, I'm back at mine today so here you go...

    2.4 Ghz = 95%

    2.7 Ghz = 99%

I've create two gaming power profiles, with the minimum and maximum processor power states set as above. Can play FSX for hours on end at 2.7Ghz, and played a few hours in total Red Orchestra 2, Riddick 1 & 2 and STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl all without trouble.

Got my Dell Outlet unit today (cert refurb). Excellent condition; no marks/scratches at all as far as I can see.

    • Fingerprint reader doesn't work
    • Per previous posts, it does run rather toasty stock. I'm seeing 50*C idle whilst typing this and listening to music on YouTube. Will try repaste later with MX-4.
    • Keyboard and touchpad good - might look in to the backlit upgrade in the future.
    • Screen a little grainy - might want to research IPS options in the future. Any good suggestions for the panel?
    • Speakers fine, lacking in bass though. EQ presets can make things sound muddy.

I might add some more items after I've done a repaste and installed Windows Server 2012 R2 on it.

EDIT: I've just noticed the battery plastic is getting scratched by the laptop. Might be a burr on the chassis - can someone take out their battery and just have a careful feel around to see if theirs have the same problem?

EDIT 2: Added some sellotape to the back of the laptop, prevening any scratching from occuring.

    Turnbull2000,

Since, I am new at this, please be patient ...
So just to make sure, I understand correctly then:

Profile 1 - Both "Min. and Max" Processor power states set to - 95%
Profile 2 - Both "Min. and Max" Processor power states set to - 99%
    ... 1. Is the above correct ?

... 2. 2.7 Ghz is the Max that the i7-4800MQ processor will go, right ? So, the 99% Cap setting is actually the Full processor speed to use, right ?

... I would also guess then, there is *no* 100% setting in the Power Profile Screen, correct ?

... 3. When playing the games you mentioned, with these "Caps", you find that there is *No* Throttling back to a CPU Ghz Rate that is Lower than the Cap % that you set (i.e. 2.4 Ghz or 2.7 Ghz), is this correct ?

...4. FSX - Stands for MS Fight Simulator game, correct ?
