Thanks for the replies :) Dell did send me the x64 installation disks for free, though I think the reason they didn't charge me for them was because the service tag details had not been transferred over and I was experiencing crashes and freezes with the laptop

I disabled optimus in the bios and that has resolved most of the freezes and crashes,

yesterday I had been using the laptop outside for a couple of hours (it was quite warm and sunny) I was watching a flash video when the sound dropped out, I noticed that the sound card driver had disabled itself, a couple of seconds later it BSOD :( , I thought this might be due to overheating as the black colour really does soak up the light/heat, it seemed fine when I rebooted it

This morning I had to restart the laptop after changing some settings the machine bleeped on boot and the screen wouldn't come on (fans and HD were whirring) I turned it off for 10min and then tried to turn it back on, fortunately the screen is now working but it's a bit disconcerting:eek:

Oh I should mention that my e6520 came with a Full HD matte screen, the panel is a lgd02d9, I can't find any specs on it but it works great outside in the sun :)

What RealTemp values are ppl seeing?
I know there is info about this on this forum and in this thread but I can never get the search function to work here, it says no results found no matter what I enter :-(

I am getting 50C at bootup in the morning after 10 hours idle and up to 55C from what I would consider normal load, nothing intensive. But I am new to this and don't know if I have RealTemp configured properly. I have been going through an external drive organising files and Replay Gain scanning my music with Foobar for a couple of hours and the fan just kicked in hard for the past 20 mins.

The keypad area only feels mildly warm. By contrast the e6400 would boot at 35-38C and feel hot to the touch from 43-48C. That was with HW monitor though I read RealTemp didn't work on E6400.

I am trying not to be paranoid, I only want to no what "normal" is :) Thanks.

I've got an issue with the soundcard, does anyone else have this :

If i start transferring data trough the network (wifi or cable) and i want to play a simple mp3 file or anything else audio related the soundcard starts to stutter.

It's like the hard disk is too slow but the hard disk is not even copying at full speed.

Power plan question : I have now the "Dell" power plan but when i disconnect the laptop from the main power supply and work on the battery it lowers the cpu (i know its normal).

Shouldn't the cpu throttle back to full speed if you have a program that needs it ? It stays stuck at 1900 to 2000 Mhz (i7 Q2720M)

Is there another power plan i should select in windows 7 that allows me in idle to completely clock down and still let's me use the full processor power if needed ?

    Thanks !

Under advanced power setting, make sure max CPU speed is still set to 100%. If it is...maybe the min is set too low...

    Ok, 4 things.

    1) Anyone else have horrible sound? I don't know what's up, but it's not nearly loud enough (as in, 5 year old laptops with mono have better sound :()

    2) I think I can get speedfan to work. PRESS FN+SHIFT + 1,5,3,2,4 (wait for caps lock to blink) then press FN+SHIFT+R...select to remove BIOS thermal management....

This will have to be done each time you boot up, but it should allow speedfan to take control of the fan. I am tinkering with it, will post results.

    3) Anyone else hate the ALPS touchpad drivers? Now that I have them installed, the mouse has too much inertia. If I scroll slowly I can't get across the page, but quickly it flies around way too fast. I might uninstall it...the page up and page down buttons are easy to access and scroll better than the touchpad...

    4) STILL have no wireless once the computer comes out of sleep...reinstalled the entire driver and stupid intelpro utility, and I have installed Wimax but it says "no adapter to take advantage of this driver"...
