I had issues with installing external harddrives. If you have a WD hard drive in you can download their version of Acronis. This worked for me. Acronis found it and I formated it then Windows saw it.

Wow..this is a real bummer. My dreams are crashing down around me...and you..and all others who thought this would be a great upgrade solution.. Thanks so much for trying...

You've tried the CoreStore, which is mPCIe, and now the MyDigital mSATA..and still nothing. This really should work, really. Dell needs to get their engineers working on a BIOS upgrade that will allow this to work...

Do you think you'd get different results if you tried the Intel SSD's? I'm not sure if there would be better support for these drives....

I realize this post is really old, and I'm not sure if anyone responded to it directly. However, the answer is no, the drive caddy / modules are different from previous E-series Latitudes and cannot be used. I actually purchased that exact module you linked to, and it did not work. I had to purchase modules made specifically for the E6520.

has anyone else noticed the graphics / monitor wigging out followed by a forced reboot with no warning or BSOD? edit:: by wigging out, i mean going totally crazy, shuttering/color weirdness, lines, etc.

I think it may have something to do with the security drivers (dell data protection stuff). it only started happening after i installed that, and stopped after i uninstalled it. with everything installed, it happened 4 times in about 8 hours.

Started happening again... Any thoughts on what could be causing it?

Does anyone know if our 6520 will support 6 bp/s. I want to upgrade to a good SSD. Also why would we be limited to 250gb
    s in SSD?

The Intel QM67 express chipset inside the E6520 supports (2) SATA III and (4) SATA II devices. Assuming Dell implements the chipset to spec, the E6520 supports 6Gbps.

AFA a 250GB SSD limit, Dell only offers a max of a 256GB drive pre-installed, but I don't think the computer has a technical limit to a drive's capacity.

Did you get just the encloser? I tried to find one but didn't have any luck. Dell wanted $160 for one with a HDD in it. Some say the aftermarket ones will be out in June sometime.

I got two empty enclosures, including shipping, for about $65. They also came with special USB 2.0 cables and can be used as external USB drives when not plugged into the modular bay. PM if you want more info.

I can give you a definitive answer on whether an Intel 40GB 310 Series mSATA SSD works: NO. I just tried it tonight. It's actually in the computer right now as I type this, and it's not recognized by the OS or the BIOS. The computer does boot, though.

Now I have 1 PCIe and 2 mSATA drives, spent over $600 on them, and none of them work with this computer. I can't return two of them and one I'll have to pay a 15% restocking fee + shipping. Nothing like being a beta tester for Dell.

Maybe such kind of SSD "msata mini" can plug into the flash sata socket of E6520. It is half size of normal msata SSD.
