16GB RAM will work if and only if you have quad-core processor.

    The answer is "it depends:"

    1) If you only have a single drive, AHCI is faster/better than RAID.
    2) If you have two drives and want to do RAID 1 between them, then you should use RAID.

It sounds like you fall into the first category, hence you should use AHCI.

You sure? Most all of the second-generation Core-i5/i7's will work with 16GB of RAM, even though they don't advertise it.

Well, I thought I was sure. But after a little Googling, I see that some dual-core machines can hold a max of 16GB, even though manufacturers advertise them as handling a max of 8GB. E.g. newer MacBook Pros.

However, the motherboard circuitry also has to support it. I have 16GB RAM in my E6520, but I have a quad-core processor. Does anyone have 16GB in a dual-core E6520?

Whatever the max resolution of the display is, is usually the best resolution. Or, whatever is best for your needs at the time.

I have 16GB in my E6220... (I need to update my sig.)

It's an i5-2520m. I also ran 16GB in my previous Vostro 3450 with the i5-2410m. OEM's don't put soft limitations on RAM capacity anymore. It's too frivolous.
