Nothing wrong with having the 16GB, the Sandy Bridge is capable of handling 32GB. Will be waiting for 16GB single SODIMM........

The tech support is wrong, new motherboard ... blocking details and reference of Nvidia. Would be pointless due to Drivers would not detect it at all, might aswell just buy a laptop with the Nvidia GPU.

Make sure you do a MemTest, to ensure the RAMs are 100% okay or else you will witness random BSOD.

I figured out what was going on..
When you have Optimus enabled, it will use Intel HD 3000 AND Nvidia, this means in Windows 7, it recognizes only the Intel.. but when not enabled, only Nvidia is enabled, so it recognizes Nvidia in windows..

Makes complete sense why it showed nvidia on 1 laptop and not the other, other laptop had optimus disabled

    Oh I though the E6420:
optimus on = Intel + NVidia
optimus off = Nvidia only

If it is, I don't see it. It has Dell Backup & Recovery, Dell Client System Update, and Smart Settings.

I'm not seeing the Power Manager, as stated in my OP. Or has Smart Settings replaced the Power Manager?

so now i swapped the 1300 sticks to 1600. the machine IS noticeably faster. it seems that the main beneficiary may be the video card that i believe is using some system RAM on top of its own. anyway - it's an improvement.

I just reformatted my system 3 times in the past few days, using the above drivers.
    Dell System Manager
    -Power Manager
    -System and Devices Manager

I have never came across "Smart Settings"... what does Smart setting do?

Seems like it's probably their newer System Manager... care to give me a link to this newer build? So I can check what you are experiencing.

zdoe: well atleast you using your i7 at its fullest :D

Smart settings is a lighter, less feature filled version of System Manager.
