Sure, that's what I mean by "lottery." I think it's OK (and probably necessary) with multiple suppliers, but there shouldn't be big discrepancies in what the end user gets. As I said in my post, I'm not sure what's worst: knowing that you're going to get a sucky screen (at least you know) or entering the screen lottery... Well I guess I'm hoping for a LG screen.

Do you find this info using the hwinfo app?

EDIT: Oh didn't see the part numbers... My order lists

    KWTPY Module,Liquid Crystal Display,14.0HDF+,Light Emitting Diode,Low Voltage Differential Signaling,AG,A

So I guess it's the Samsung.

No, just grabed and decoded edid info from nvidia settings.

Don't be worried yet :). All eyes are different too, and may be it will be OK for you.

Yeah, I'll report back once I get it for sure. I'm haven't been, let's say, exactly impressed with the screen of my E6410, but it's been generally fine. So unless it's somehow WORSE, it's probably going to be OK.

But whenever I see an iPad or something else with an IPS-screen I go "oh how pretty it all looks!". :/ If I were to change the panel myself I'd want to change it to an IPS panel...

EDIT: Looked in hwinfo -- not that it's comparable -- but my current E6410 display is a LG Philips [Unknown Model: LGD0257]; 141WP2 [DELL P/N: 875VK].

I don't see where it's listed in the nvidia control panel.

    In HwInfo, I see this:

If correct, that means there's yet another potential source for 1600x900 monitors.

It is indeed a matte panel. I've found no faults with it. it's plenty bright and viewing angles and blacks look good. I'm probably going to have to return to the D630's awful screen though, as I'm going to end up putting the E6420 up for sale sadly. Gotta pay for a repainted bumper. :(

In my opinion this screen is absolutely OK. Sure it's an eye-sore when it's all black but for anything else it's perfectly fine. It's bright and sharp. According to hwinfo it's a Samsung 140KT from week 0, 2010. The angles aren't exactly impressive but seem to be on par with my E6410.

I haven't really tried movies and stuff but that's not something I watch super-often on this screen anyway.

My other initial impressions of the E6420 vs the E6410

    - The keyboard is not as nice to type on. Feels cheaper.
    - The build quality overall is better though.
    - It is bezel land, but it bothers me less IRL than on photos.

I know this has been covered before....but I can't find it. I am looking to do 2x SSDs in a RAID-0. What is the part number for the media bay SATA whatever?

    Hello,

Just got one for work, with an i7 2720 and NVS graphics card. Is it normal if the fan (cpu I guess? low left side fan noise) is always on even if Idle in battery mode? I mean not on High speed but still, it's never passive. Edit: Just browing with chrome and no other activity the fan speed went up again a few seconds ago when CPU temp went up to 60°C...
I'm not even sure if the CPU speed is getting throttled if there is no activity (battery life seems low for a new notebook).

It's not a problem at work when using another display as the computer is pretty far, but if I'm using the notebook with nothing external the noise gets on my nerves pretty fast :|

Is the system always in "dedicated graphics mode?"

What size battery do you have?

On my i5 NVS system, the fan's off as I type this, so something seems "off" about your system somehow.
