In case anyone ever wonders, the E5420 - I took the plunge - has a standard 12.7 mm optical drive. I was able to switch it with a blu-ray drive I already had, and it works like a charm. Fitting the cover on the side was easy too.

I have the same configuration except I have the 500gb sata harddrive I find that my fans run almost all the time even when I am just on the web with only a few windows open does your notebook do that? I downloaded gpu-z to monitor the gpu tempature which seems to idle around 68 degrees.

That is what I thought considering I am not really pushing the system I will check to see if there is a bios update maybe that will help. I guess that is why my fans are running all the time.

Well, decided to get one of these with the latest 20% coupon from the outlet. Was able to score the following for $607.20:

    Latitude E6420 Laptop
    Intel WiFi Link 6205 (802.11a/g/n 2X2) 1/2 MiniCard
    Wave Systems Software
    Certified Refurbished
    Software
INTEL VPRO TECHNOLOGY ADV MGMT FEATURES
    Optical Drive Bezel
    4 GB DDR3 ECC SDRAM 1333MHz (2 DIMMs)
    Genuine Windows 7 Professional
    Thermal Heatsink with Fan 35W
    Bluetooth Cable
    Integrated Webcam with digital microphone
    14.0 inch HD (1600x900) Anti-Glare LED-backlit with Premium Panel
    Nvidia NVS 4200M 512MB DDR3 Discrete Graphics
    64BIT Operating System
    Processor: Intel Core i5-2540M (2.60GHz, 3MB Cache)
    Keyboard
    8X DVD ROM Drive
    90W AC Adapter
    6 Cell Primary Battery
500 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)

It would have been nice to find one with a back lit keyboard but this will work. My biggest concern was the 1600 x 900 screen, processor, and 500 gb hd.

So it was you who bought the laptop I was about to buy! LOL no worries I got myself one too, but mine came out to $695 after taxes. It arrives on the 25th. We'll see how I like it and how the build quality is.

    Considering to buy this!

Can anyone confirm how it works with the newest release of Ubuntu? That's my only possible gripe - linux support.

ALso, are you able to add a second storage media (SSD)?

Pretty pissed off about all these 20% coupons you guys have, I have to pay roughly $180 for a brand new one in Norway. :\

UGH, If my car didn't decide that it wasn't long for this world, I'd be using part of my refund to finally upgrade from ye olde D630. Such good machines the E6420's are. :)

I'm thinking about buying one of these. I normally just buy my Latitudes from eBay, but this time I want to buy direct from Dell. How do you guys get around buying a brand new latitude and not own a business? Don't they ask for your tax ID?
