If you have been using RAPID mode then turn it off and see if the instability disappears. I wouldn't be at all suprised if it trips up on a relatively old hardware / software configuration - something the developers would never have dreamed of testing it for.

You raise an interesting point about the power consumption. I doubt if that is an issue as Dell usually provides plenty of power headroom in its designs (typically the power supplies are a size bigger than is needed under normal usage). Tom's Hardware used to measure SSD power but it seems this has now stopped. The most recent results (2014) are here and only one (not a Samsung) exceed 5W.

I agree on Rapid mode. I had started with it. Seen some errors. Turned it off. Seen no errors.. but then as I was intending to redo the clone anyway I re-enabled it to try and confirm my suspicion... and I did see more errors and the final collapse.

I think you are right about the system probably being able to provide enough power... but then I remember that when I cloned the system to the disk I did so using the eSATAp port. I didn't see any logged errors during the process though it took longer than I expected.

The first error I saw after I cloned the drive was

    volsnap 29
"The shadow copies of volume D: were aborted during detection."
but I doubt that is important as it occurs right after "Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service volsnap for Device Instance" - I suspect that is when I first plugged it in after cloning.

Does anybody know the maximum power output of the E6420 eSATAp port?

    Hi.
I'm seeking for way to get better screen for my E6420. Best of known 14" LVDS LCD is LP140WD2(TL)(E2), "native" for Thinkpad X1 Carbon, oftenly used fot Thinkpad T420/430 upgrade.
But bottom parts of MJ-154, "native" for Dell E6420 https://img2.parts-people.com/ppc-dell-parts-image.png and LP140WD2(TL)(E2) https://www.laptopscreen.com/img/screens/1000/LP140WD2_TLE2.jpg is different.
As you can see on 1:30 E6420 has some space below screen.
Any ideas - will LP140WD2(TL)(E2) fit E6420? Any similar expirience?

Found sizes for Dell E6420 native LCD 323.5(W)×192.5(H) mm and for Thinkpad X1 Carbon LCD (320.4(W)×198.1(H).
So, if free space below screen in E6420 is enough...

Looks like Chi Mei N140O6-L02 will fit E6420. Any opinions or reviews about this LCD?

I'm thinking about upgrading my E6420 from an i5-2520M to an i7-2760QM processor. This is apparently well supported since there were E6420 laptops sold with this processor. It does sound though like it is appropriate/necessary to upgrade the cooling system at the same time. Has anyone successfully installed the TYP01 cooler with the dual heat pipe in a model without the discrete Nvidia graphics chip? There is an inductor on the motherboard that looks like it may interfere. I'm not sure if there are any other challenges as well. I've read much of the thread but didn't find a clear answer to this question or confirmation of success. Thanks!

I see that BIOS version A24 is released - it addresses the security flaw in Intel AMT. Release date 23 May 2017.

I suggest running Dell Command Update to get it or manually doing a driver update.

(There was also a recent Ethernet driver update which may have been related... it wasn't a very recently created update but it seemed it hadn't been pushed to the E6420's before)

    Hi
I have done that (the cpu I am using is the i7-2720qm), but you will have to modify the heatsink in order to fit.

    Hey,

Sorry for the late reply. I managed to cut everything with a standard cutting plier. And yes it's possible to cut without damaging the heatpipes.

    Regards
