Do you guys have a preferred place to purchase latitude batteries? I understand, as usual there are two choices, junk generics vs legit dell. As expected the Dell battery costs an arm and a leg.

Is there any suggested place to buy Dell battery? The one that came with the laptop is a 6Cell that holds about 80% of it's charge, and so far has lasted me about 2 hours of moderate usage in linux without enabling any special power saving features, yet (which would be better in Windows).

Is there any place I should check before plonking down a $150 big ones for a Dell battery? I can get another 6410 off ebay for a little more than that

Thanks. How do I know whether they are genuine OEMs though.

I was about to pull the trigger on 90%+ (five health led) used ones for about $18-20, but if these are really OEM, I'd rather go for them.

    Thanks.

Also: What's the difference between the two 9 cells? I had read up on it a few years ago, don't recall. Does the 81WHr Extended just have a longer life (as in life span) than the 90WHr Standard?

Health isn't reliable because it requires the battery to be calibrated.

Extended life batteries originally ship with three-year warranties, instead of the standard one-year, so they should be more durable. Lower capacity is also an indication that it was a tradeoff for durability.

Sound right. Is there a noticeable difference between the two? 81 vs 90? Life span is much more important to me than the battery life, so unless it's some significant difference, I'll go for the extended one.

Also, I'm getting used 90WHr ones with >80% battery life for about $22. Not much of a saving but at least I'm more likely to get a genuine one. But the ones you posted at least seem genuine.

Is there a way to tell which ones are genuine? (enter the serial number on Dell's website or something and validate it or something?)

I presume I cannot expect any warranty from Dell if I but from eBay?

Thanks for all the help. I'm googling for all this as we speak but there's too much noise because of this being such a common topic. I really do appreciate your help.

Standard life batteries will begin to lose capacity quickly (probably already lost some, as these batteries would have been sitting around for at least a year or two), so capacity isn't a significant concern. I would recommend the extended life battery.

I wouldn't bother with used batteries, as they are consumables. As for telling if they are genuine, there is no real good way other than scrutinizing it. Fake labels are easy to spot, especially if the logo isn't correct. There are also some variations in OEM labels, so keep that in mind.

You won't be able to get warranty from Dell without an order number.

Excellent. I'll be purchasing an extended 9 cell one *new*.

Thanks for your quick help man, really appreciate it. It won't let me 'rep' you since I already did once. :D (FWIW)

So I've been looking at Windows versions and even though I am primarily going to be using Linux, I'm wondering if I were to purchase 8.1, will win 7 drivers work?

Can't say for sure, as my E6410 is still running Windows 7, but most should work fine.
