E6400 is about $500 more than ThinkPad T400. What gives?

what do you mean? The starting price for the E6400 is only 879 now. So it's only 31.5 more expensive than the T400.

I don't think price necessarily indicates more betterness, but I'd have to look and see what the specs are. I'll say I doubt it's as rugged/well built as the T400 is.

Interesting it's more though (I will configure a like model to mine later). I've usually found Dells are a better value in the performance/dollar category vs Thinkpads and are usually pretty good choices if you want to save a bit of money.

edit: OK so far I've been looking at the configuration. One thing I've noted is the RAM costs $210 more for the 4GB DDR2 upgrade from the 1GB base configuration. On my T400 the 4GB DDR3 upgrade was $170 or 180 more than the base 1GB configuration. If you chose the 4GB upgrade (1 DIMM) then it is $540 more.

I'm coming to a total of $1770 which is $70 more than I paid for my T400, however I used the educational site discount on top of the Labor Day 25% off discount which saved me over $700. Looks to me like the Dell is cheaper!

I should note that I just clicked on the E6400 link appearing in Eivuwan's post and started configuring it from there.

Well I was looking at the Canadian site, maybe they're just overcharging here then. But of course the starting price is nonsense. It includes next to nothing. Here I configured an E6400 and a T400 similarly:

    $1681 for this E6400:
    PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 (2.40GHz, 3M L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB) edit
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic SP1, With media edit
LCD DISPLAY Black Wide Screen WXGA+ LCD Panel edit
WARRANTY & SERVICE 3 Year Basic Limited Warranty and 3 Year NBD Onsite Service edit
    MEMORY 2.0GB, DDR2-800 SDRAM, 1 DIMM edit
GRAPHICS CARD NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M With Express Card edit
HARD DRIVE 160GB Hard Drive, 7200RPM with Free Fall Sensor edit
OPTICAL DRIVE 24X CDRW/DVD with Cyberlink PowerDVD™ edit
BATTERY OPTIONS 6 Cell Battery edit
INTERNAL KEYBOARD Internal English Keyboard edit
INTEGRATED WEBCAM NO CAMERA, with single digital microphone edit
WIRELESS CARDS Intel&174; WiFi Link 5300 802.11a/g/n Draft Mini Card edit

    And $1264 for the T400:
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo processor P8600 (2.40GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2) 1
Operating system: Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic 1
Operating system language: Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic - English 1
    Display type: 14.1 WXGA+ TFT w/ LED BL 1
System graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon 3640 with 256MB 1
    Total memory: 2 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 (1 DIMM) 1
Keyboard language: US English Keyboard 1
Hard drive: 160GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm 1
Optical device: CD-RW/DVD-ROM, Ultrabay Slim 1
System expansion slots: Express Card & PC Card Slots 1
Integrated WiFi wireless LAN adapters: Intel WiFi Link 5300 1
    Modem: Yes - AMoM 1
Integrated wireless WAN adapters: Integrated WWAN upgradable 1
    Battery: 6 cell Li-Ion Battery 1

So, ok, not $500 difference, but $419. Still.

I guess it comes down to the fact that the T400 is on sale now while the E6400 is not (in Canada, anyway). So I guess it's just a matter of waiting for a sale...

Try negotiating on the phone to get the rep to match or at least come close to the USA prices. I did that and he dropped about $350 on the laptop, I got free shipping, and subsequently saved on taxes. Specs in my signature.

Let me know if you want the ext for the rep I ordered from. I paid a total of $1473.52 taxes in.

On the Canadian site there's only one starting point for the E6400. I was planning to get the RAM separately anyway, but that doesn't change the T400/E6400 price discrepancy. The hard drive I chose is only $98 more than the base, and that's about what a 160GB 7200RPM notebook drive costs anyway so getting it separately wouldn't save much.
